Kristi Noem Impeachment Moves Forward: Full List of Sponsors

More than 50 Democrats serving in the House of Representatives have signed onto articles of impeachment against Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

Why It Matters

Representative Robin Kelly, an Illinois Democrat, introduced articles of impeachment against Noem after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, last week. The shooting has drawn increased scrutiny to the tactics used by ICE.

A DHS spokesperson previously dismissed the impeachment efforts as "silly."

DHS has said that Good sought to weaponize her vehicle against the officer and that he feared for his life. But critics have disputed that characterization, arguing that video footage of the shooting shows she was attempting to drive away at the time and that the shooting was unnecessary.

What To Know

In total, at least 50 House Democrats have signed onto the articles, according to a list released by Kelly's office. The list was first reported by Axios. Her office told the outlet that more Democrats may sign on later.

The list includes more progressive Democrats, such as Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. But several more centrist Democrats running in potentially competitive races, such as Representative Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico or Eric Sorensen of Illinois, also joined the effort.

Here is the full list of House Democrats who have signed onto the articles of impeachment.

Anger at ICE has risen following the fatal shooting of Good last week. Democrats remain divided about what is the best way to handle the agency. Some have called for the outright dismantling of the agency, a proposal supported by a plurality of voters in a new YouGov poll this week. Others believe the agency should be reformed.

What People Are Saying

A DHS spokesperson told Newsweek: "How silly during a serious time. As ICE officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them, Rep. Kelly is more focused on showmanship and fundraising clicks than actually cleaning up her crime-ridden Chicago district. We hope she would get serious about doing her job to protect American people, which is what this Department is doing under Secretary Noem.”

Representative Robin Kelly, an Illinois Democrat, said during a press conference on Wednesday: "Renee Nicole Good is dead because Secretary Noem allowed her DHS agents to run amok. Families are forever torn apart. This is not about personalities or trivial disagreements. Secretary Noem has called by impeachment effort 'silly.' I want to tell her right now, Secretary Noem, you have violated your oath of office, and there will be consequences."

Representative Kelly Morrison, a Minnesota Democrat, said in a statement: "Kristi Noem’s reckless and dangerous ICE operations have completely eroded all public trust. Schools have been forced to close. Businesses and restaurants have been forced to close. Families are terrified to go to work, to seek medical care, to get groceries, or to even leave their homes. And I am routinely receiving outreach from constituents who have had family members – US citizens – detained by ICE and they cannot contact them. Secretary Kristi Noem is making Americans less safe. This is indisputably disqualifying."

What Happens Next

The articles of impeachment may face an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Republican leadership has remained supportive of Noem and the administration overall, so it's unclear whether any House Republicans would support impeachment. However, immigration remains a major issue ahead of the midterms, and Democrats may have more authority to advance such efforts if they retake control of Congress in November.

How long before Nome is out of this job but the next day we see an EO making her the Secretary of White House Massages. $300k/year make sure everyone is relaxed....not like this pesky job she has now...too stressful

Should this move forward and she be required to testify, I think she'll need at least a months' worth of new power suits and one new Gulfstream to match.

One ICE Agent shouts, “Move, move, move”.

Good says to another agent, "That's fine dude. I'm not mad at you."

Good starts to drive forward and to the right, away from the agent, when the agent fires a first shot from the vehicle’s left. The agent fires two more shots from the side as the vehicle pulls away.

None of the three available videos show Good “viciously” running over an ICE agent as Trump stated. The agent also fired multiple shots at Good after the vehicle was no longer pointed at any of the three agents seen in the clips.

Shooter, ICE Agent Jonathan David Ross, walks briskly away (uninjured) and ignoring all legal protocols, drives away in his truck.

The Federal government cleared away the crime scene and towed Good’s car (windows open), without forensic investigation. They also gathered valuable evidence, such as computers, from the home of the shooter Ross. They did not co-operate with state law enforcement or justice officials.

I've been on blood thinning medication for years, and a few times a year I bump into something while home or outside, and get a bruise. I've never called it "internal bleeding."

Indeed. Ross is one of the agents moving equipment at his house the following day. No problems at all.

I don’t care about immigration. I do care about unaccountable government agents waging a terror campaign against American citizens.

Democrats will violently oppose the removal of illegal 'migrants' from the United States. They will do anything they can to destroy those who enforce the law. They are desperate

Another campaign of destruction by Democrats. I can't remember the last time they tried to do something constructive.

Obama deported millions with no due process. The Democrats approved. They didn't behave disrespectfully towards ICE. What changed? Is any leftists willing to try to give an articulate answer? (I'm betting not.)

Except Obama used the law. Nothing these illegal arrests and killings

              • Reply by Spectator.

"Expedited/administrative procedures" is what Trump was using and what was causing Democrats to lose their S.

There were no Democrat-sponsored protests against ICE when Obama was doing it.
