Fresh from WWDC, I took the stage with Alex Márton at the Craft Docs x Shapr3D joint meetup to discuss our key insights and what excited us most about the new features. Here’s a quick recap: 1. Adopt to Liquid glass as much as your design language allows and be true to yourself: Apple improved and extended glass materials in iOS26/macOS26, so we incorporated the design in our navigation and toolbars, even in our tab bar. The whole app was redesigned around how corners and materials used everywhere. 2. Use Apple Foundation Models on well scoped, language oriented tasks: We integrated the model in our assistant, so it can help with editing your documents even offline. It showed promising results in non-English languages too! 3. Always prepare with baseline stability and integration work around new OS-es, users will adopt fast: We made Craft stable and ready for the new windowing system, even added top menu support. Since the meetup iOS26/macOS26 released, and so have we, on day 1. 📱 You can try the app here: https://lnkd.in/dgCJZCaD #WWDC #Craft #Shapr3D #iOS26 #macOS26

Ever jumped into a massive, unfamiliar codebase and found it surprisingly easy to navigate? No surprises, no camouflage, no pretending things are what they’re not. Just clear interfaces and confidence in how things fit together. That’s not magic, it’s engineering principles at work. The next DevBP meetup will focus on two topics we care deeply about: engineering principles and code ownership. Two presentations, with infinite depth: - Daniel Terhorst-North (Dan North & Associates) will be our special guest, talking about a new set of engineering principles: CUPID (Composable, Unix philosophy, Predictable, Idiomatic, Domain-based). - Peter Nemeth (Shapr3D) ) will share how we began defining best practices around modularization and how we integrated code ownership into our development process. Last week, we hosted our first DevBP meetup at Craft Docs, around the theme “The Age of AI.” Balint Orosz took us behind the scenes of building Chaps, and what it really takes to craft AI agents. András Fincza continued with his experience of building a startup product with AI in the loop, and pairing up with tools like Cursor AI. What a night! 100+ people, real-life examples, sometimes clashing opinions, but most importantly: fun talks. Great to have you all with us; see you at the next one!

Have you ever wondered how a lot of startups nowadays choose to stay intentionally small, and efficient, yet achieve big things anyway? When it comes to hiring, at Craft Docs, we are taking a similar approach, we take time to get to know you, understand your passions, and figure out if we're a match. No generic checklists, just real conversations. Curious about how our hiring process looks from the inside? Check out the full breakdown here https://lnkd.in/dGuEEWKB

  • Ever wondered what it’s like to build a design-first product in an industry dominated by backend thinking? 👀 On The Pragmatic Engineer podcast, our founder, Balint Orosz, shares his journey of putting design, animation, and fluid user experience at the core of software engineering, something that’s often overlooked. In this conversation, Bálint and his brother, Gergely Orosz dive into: 🎨  Why design-focused engineers often struggle to fit in ⚡️ The custom-built tech behind Craft’s buttery-smooth animations  🛠️ How a single codebase powers Craft across iOS, iPad, Mac, and VisionOS  💡The bold choice to build our own UI system instead of relying on native components If you’re an engineer, designer, or founder looking to build products that stand out, this episode is a must-watch! How cool is it show a dev working at Apple an iOS / Mac smooth UI and them to say "that should really NOT be impossible with our UI elements." Turns out so many things become possible when you build your own UI elements from scratch, not depending on the system UI elements - which all come with their own limitations. It's what my brother Balint Orosz did at Craft Docs - and they did it because they wanted to retain the kind of control that built-in UI elements simply would not afford. Also, because if you know how UIs are built: creating your own UI elements are not nearly as complex as most would assume. It's just that most devs building on a platform would not do this investment. In the full episode we look at the surprisingly clear code of this custom UI as well: • YouTube: https://lnkd.in/enYhrNB2 • Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eaPvT7c9 • Apple: https://lnkd.in/eqYr-t3g • Summary and transcript: https://lnkd.in/eJWZKsm7

Most engineering leaders and founders come from a backend engineering background. But not everyone: Balint Orosz has always been a "design-first" engineer. Balint is my brother, and we're opposites in how I've always felt more pull for the backend, and he's been always building intuitive UIs. We go into what it means to start with the UI and design, and how he built Craft Docs - an app that won Apple's App of the Year award. • YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eTYpWnbe • Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eaPvT7c9   • Apple: https://lnkd.in/eqYr-t3g Brought to you by our wonderful sponsors: • WorkOS — The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS https://workos.comAugment Code — AI coding assistant that pro engineering teams love https://lnkd.in/ddCkDrxF • The Software Engineer’s Guidebook: Written by me (Gergely) – now out in audio form as well https://lnkd.in/dEkcvW2T ---- Three of my takeaways: 𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻-𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻. Engineers who focus on backend and distributed systems can usually verbalize their impact clearer, and could see faster career growth – including getting into leadership positions. This creates a reinforcing cycle: as most engineering executives have a backend engineering background: they will recognize and reward backend contributions more. 𝟮. 𝗔 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. Craft has a total of 4 engineers building the respective apps for: • iOS • iPad • MacOS • VisionOS They can do this, because it’s a single codebase! A single codebase also means that all features built on one platform immediately work on all others. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀: 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵. Craft does not use Apple’s UI components: they don’t use SwiftUI or Autolayout – something that 95% or more of iOS apps all take advantage of. Craft, instead, built their own components from scratch, and came up with their own layout and animations system. This is a lot more work at first: but it’s how Craft can do smooth animations that most apps are unable to do so – and it’s a reason engineers at Apple have asked the team “how are you able to do such a smooth animation on the navigation bar?” (The native iOS navigation bar cannot be animated like Craft does it) Craft can do all this thanks to building and maintaining their own components. It’s simpler to do than most would assume: in the episode, we look at actual code.

Last year, we kicked off a new initiative, Week togethers at Craft Docs. During these recurring weeks remote colleagues join us at our Budapest office, and we spend time together filled with in-person collaboration, bonding and learning. This year, we've added something new: each time we invite inspiring external speakers to bring fresh perspectives into our conversations. Last Thursday, we welcomed Viktória Teleki Farkas and Tamás Avar, founders of the PEAK Project. Viki shared her inspiring story about how she and her partner designed and built a boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean in world-record time. After that, Tamás provided some scientific background on how such an achievement is possible and discussed practices that can lead to extraordinary resilience and performance. Thank you again Viki and Tamás for the thought-provoking presentation! The conversation didn't stop there, over the joint team dinner we kept the discussion going, sharing thoughts and dilemmas, including our own experiences about how to stay focused and resilient during challenging times.

It was a pleasure joining Michael Riddering on Dive Club to talk about some of the design philosophy behind Craft Docs and what it took to build a product we’re proud of! We covered a lot, from the importance of starting mobile-first to creating a deeply personalized experience that feels like ‘home,’ and so much more.  If you want to dive in, here’s the full episode : https://lnkd.in/drtx7MTr

What does it take to create a product worthy of winning Mac app of the year? Here are 6 takeaways from my chat with the founder of Craft Docs👇 Here's the full episode with Balint Orosz so you can bookmark it (it's gold) https://lnkd.in/gjWvZcTW Now let's dive in... ——— 1️⃣ Mobile first Balint intentionally started with a mobile app to ensure they created the simplest possible solution. In a way this type of constraint forces novelty (reminds me of how Play made a similar decision in the early days) ——— 2️⃣ Personalization Craft does a lot to make it feel like "home" It can be black and white text or a colorful personal Pinterest. Which presents a ton of unique design challenges. I've been dissecting their style dialogues lately (they're very very good if you want a new source of inspiration) 👀 ——— 3️⃣ Figma They think about Figma as the initial phase of “sketching”. This means more often than not they have significant changes happen while a design is brought to life in code. This forces designers and engineers to work closely and explore ideas in tandem. Balint says "engineering's not pissed off if we need to throw something away" which I think is the measuring stick for healthy design<>dev collaboration. ——— 4️⃣ Design systems Craft doesn't focus on atomic components at all. Instead they systematize things like their animation engine and theming (ex: making it easy for an element to inherit the “glowing” effect of a gradient background material) But no button components though! ——— 5️⃣ Experimentation Craft has two roadmaps: • Two weeks • One year This creates a lot of space for reacting to customer feedback but also for experimentation. Designers are expected to experiment with things like LLMs and even creating shaders! ——— 6️⃣ Hiring “What’s the main trait you look for in designers?” Balint's answer 👉 systems thinking ——— We go deep into how Craft works and what it takes to achieve an award-winning level of design excellence in the full episode. It's a good one so I hope you enjoy it! 🎧 https://lnkd.in/gjWvZcTW
