Patrick Sensburg, chairman of the German Reservists Association, has called for a European brigade to be stationed in Greenland.
In an interview with Bild, he said that Europe must demonstrate a serious presence in the region, given US President Donald Trump’s intentions regarding the strategic Arctic island, DW reports.
According to Sensburg, at least one European brigade should be deployed as soon as possible under Danish command.
He stressed that Germany would bear special responsibility in this process, and the Bundeswehr would gain strategic advantages by training soldiers in the challenging Arctic conditions.
The head of the Union also emphasized that such a joint operation would strengthen European unity and demonstrate the continent’s readiness to act independently in the field of security.
In his opinion, this would send a signal to allies and competitors that Europe is capable of defending its own interests in the Arctic.
The British government is also in talks with European allies regarding the possible deployment of military forces in Greenland.
