Inspiring Conversations with Angela Klick of Polka Dot Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Klick. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Angi worked in the triathlon industry and managed two triathlon stores prior to having her children. After she had her second child, she realized that she missed the sport of triathlon and wanted to get back into it. She recruited a few of her friends that had never done a triathlon before to join her in training for a triathlon. She then founded a local chapter of the non-profit Tri it for Life, which helps women get started in the sport of triathlon. In 2015, after starting the Charleston chapter of Tri It for Life, Angi realized that there was a void in the triathlon community for beginner women events. The closest women’s only triathlon was in North Carolina, so she decided to plan a women’s only triathlon in Charleston, which is where the idea for She Tris began. With approachable distances, She Tris is an event any level of participant can accomplish. Angi wants to continue to inspire women to put themselves first and create their own journey to becoming a triathlete. Often times what happens after the finish line and the confidence that gets instilled into the women of She Tris is the real magic! In 2018, I added my business partner and triathlon buddy to She Tris and Sarah is an invaluable part of the team! Together we are unstoppable!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When she first contacted a race production company about the timing of the event the owner told her the sport of triathlon was dying and a women’s event won’t work. Well, Angi doesn’t like it when someone tells her that her ideas won’t work so she went ahead anyway with the idea and in four months the inaugural event sold out!

The pandemic has also a been big challenge. In 2020 all of the events were changed to virtual events. Participants were hesitant to sign up. We did learn some valuable lessons and reached so many participants all over the nation and a few countries outside of the US that we will always keep a virtual component of each She Tris Event. We’re looking forward to 2022 to get back to the fun we had before the pandemic hit!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Did I have a mentor? I would say directly yes, but not completely in the traditional form. I like participating in endurance-type events and I am intrigued by event productions. I participated in a few women focused events and I was so intrigued by the ones that really nailed the small details. The ones that for lack of a better way to say it, “pampered women” during their participation. That’s exactly how I aspire She Tris events to be. We hand out custom finishers keepsakes designed by local jewelry artists, we offer hair braiding, finish line mimosas, and photographers who capture the special moments of the day, plus much more! Come find out for yourself! I might be on a small scale now, but I have big dreams. In addition to paying attention to what I like about events and how I can incorporate prorate them into the She Tris style, I will say my dad is my biggest business mentor. He is an entrepreneur himself and he teaches me very valuable lessons. The second mentor I had was another local race director that retired and spent endless hours teaching me what I needed to know. Both mentors continue to have a huge impact on the business and events. Their lessons and helpful tips along the way make a big difference in my success.
