'May not be what you think': 'Unapologetically extreme' Moms for Liberty group exposed

During the Sunday, July 16, episode of MSNBC's Inside with Jen Psaki, Psaki took a few minutes to educate viewers on the increasingly popular political group, Moms for Liberty.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, according to NPR, has deemed the nonprofit organization "extremist," saying, "They really are seeking to undermine public education holistically and to divide communities."

Psaki began the segment saying, "Since the height of the COVID pandemic, schools, teachers, and administrators have all become the targets of right-wing anger. First it was the reaction to COVID restrictions, which then morphed into outrage over the teaching of race and identity, and outrage over CRT — critical race theory. Which rapidly turned our education system into the frontline of the right's ongoing culture war. That anger no doubt sparked the rise of organizations, now focused on taking over school boards, pulling books from the shelves, and changing curriculums in schools across the country. In fact, according to a 2022 report from a nonprofit that tracks censorship in America, 70 percent of those organizations were formed in about an 18 month period, beginning at the start of 2021. Among the largest of these new groups, which you may have heard of, is Moms for Liberty, and it's recently become something of a political powerhouse. Just a few weeks ago, they hosted five Republicans presidential candidates, including the frontrunners, Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis — they all came out for Moms for Liberty."

She continued, "Now, the group has declared itself a nonpartisan organization, and its name does sound innocuous enough — Moms — great, sounds good. Liberty — awesome, who doesn't like liberty? "Moms for Liberty" — as the mom of two young kids, that even sounds good to me. But, it's vague enough, that even some of its own members are pretty unclear as to what the group is really all about, what they're a part of. One mom who became treasurer of an Indiana chapter was even quoted asking, 'What am I a part of? I need to know these things.' Fair question. Well, I'm here to help. I'm here to help you. Because as benign as Moms for Liberty may sound, its agenda is unmistakably extreme. For instance, you may not know that Moms for Liberty has been helping to lead the movement in pulling books from the library shelves, including classics, like The Bluest Eye — great book. The Kite Runner — amazing book. As well as other books that deal with race, diversity and sexuality."

Furthermore, Psaki said, "The group has turned school board meetings into unruly shouting matches. As an attendee at one Florida meeting described, 'They turn around and scream at me that I am a commie, and teachers want to see all kids fail. This group brings out the worst in people.' The group says this work, all this shouting, is the work of 'joyful warriors,' is what they call it. Sounds a lot more to me like pretty aggressive harassment. And that behavior is not isolated, it's part of a bigger pattern. Chapters and members across the country have led campaigns targeting community advocates, school board members, and opposing groups. They've repeatedly sent intimidating messages, openly threatened officials, and even baselessly leveled charges of child abuse and sympathizing with pedophilia. Unbelievably, an Indiana chapter even put out a newsletter that quoted Adolf Hitler, saying, 'He alone who owns the youth gains the future' — that is a Hitler quote. And while they eventually apologized, the organization seemed to later regret that apology."

The former White House press secretary then rolled a video of a MFL member saying to an audience that she supports the mom who quoted Hitler in the newsletter.

Psaki went on to say, "Standing by a mom who quotes Hitler in a newsletter. People cheering for that. That's what you just saw," adding, "And as for their claim that they are just a group of concerned, nonpartisan moms who happen to care about liberty, consider this: One of the founders, who's name is notably omitted from its website, is a current Republican school board member, who is married to the now-chairman of the Florida Republican Party. In 2021, he told the Washington Post, "I have been trying for a dozen years to get 20- and 30-year old females involved with the Republican Party. But now Moms for Liberty has done it for me."

The MSNBC host sarcastically commented, "Sounds pretty apolitical," emphasizing, "So, below the surface of their friendly sounding name, and politically vague taglines, they're an unapologetically extreme organization that has built a long record of harassment and controversy, in a pretty short period of time. Some free advice out there for people who are not sure what the organization is about — whether it's called Moms for Liberty or Puppies for Ice Cream — it's worth looking into the agenda of an organization before joining it. Sometimes, it may not be what you think."

From Wikipedia -- Moms for Liberty is an American right-wing[1] political organization that advocates against school curriculums that mention LGBT rights, race and ethnicity, critical race theory, and discrimination.

This sounds like subjects that should be taught/learned at home. I personally think with the critical race theory, which includes (all of the above mentioned except for lgbt) is some kind of weird narrative they are trying to push and I don't personally understand why they can't just teach the true American history and call it a day.

In learning about true American history children will learn why some laws were based in racism, they will learn about discrimination, they will learn about race and ethnicity and what not. I think that critical race theory wants to tell children how to feel about those things before they can assess those things for themselves.

Why should the school start teaching about lgbt which includes currently, not even knowing the definition of a woman and pronouns? I would protest to teach my own children as well and tell them folks to stick to math, english, reading, writing, etc.

Jen and any person (probably white) who couldn't figure out that any group with the world moms and liberty in its title is right wing, must have been asleep for the past 23 years.

I'm continually unimpressed with her show and it's set.

Racist Karens harassing folks and wanting control is textbook White Woman with no control at home behavior.

These harpies are busy screeching while their domineering husbands are cheating like mad and waiting until the kids are adults to pull the plug. Their kids hate them and are counting the days until they're eighteen. Then they can go NC.

Every time you see these extremist WW, they're overweight by White standards, past their prime in the White community or plain as hell.

We almost never see pretty WW out here openly being sacrificial racism cheerleaders. The White community will put the swines out there before the Arabians.

There’s a lot of inconsistencies here. Do you have the necessary requirements to homeschool? Children should be taught about the world as it is. Gay people exist and black history isn’t “CRT”. Y’all really don’t respect others nor can y’all mind your own business. All these false statements are right wing talking points.

No, no, and also, no.

“Critical Race Theory“ is used as a new kind of McCarthyism. It’s not a curriculum taught in K through 12. That’s your first error.

As far as tell[ing] children how to feel about those things before they can assess those things for themselves is actually what’s called “education.” Do you teach your children religion? Patriotism? Did you begin before they could assess those things for themselves?

Schools do not teach “lgbt.” What schools do is not exclude human beings from books that have (only in the past fifty years) people who are in wheelchairs, people with learning disabilities, blind and deaf people, people with autism. Little kids might learn that some kids have two mommies or daddies. These kids exist. Older kids who realize they are LGBTQ, having to navigate parents and religion and peer pressure, will learn that they shouldn’t feel odd or defective or suicidal.

I think the thrust of your post is that you‘re alarmed that there are trans people. And, interestingly, the concentration on pronouns is telling. There is absolutely no reason why another American choosing a different pronoun than the one you expect might make you uncomfortable.

I love the inclusion of Readin’ and Writin’ and ‘Rithmatic. It always harkens back to a time where Americans (unlike the learned societies of other nations) thought children only needed enough education to navigate the working or housewife world. To introduce anthropology, sociology, even geology, meant children would become aware of the world outside their family, broaden their minds, and perhaps (this is the big one) question their religion.

There is a kind of paranoia peculiar to young moms. IF I enforce my values with a sledgehammer, screen my child’s reading material, keep him tucked close next to me, he will go out into the world exactly as I molded him to be. He‘s my raisin cookie without blemish. He is going to help bring the US back to sanity.

It’s a dream, sweetie. The “good old days” were smoke and mirrors, carefully remembered as a myth where families were white, intact, happy, suburban, and everyone else was invisible in their abuse and need.

It’s kind of like the Bible. Folks use it to push patriarchy and condemn gay people, but don’t want to discuss the stories that don’t make it onto tee shirts and family room plaques—the ones with God ordering worldwide death (including kids and pregnant women), incest, rape, child sacrifice, killing unrighteous neighbors. It’s there, but it is unsettling. Let’s focus on the Ten Commandments and miracles.

Education doesn’t work if it is shaped by the personal values of a segment of parents, and it especially doesn’t work when parents encourage one another to attempt to control what all children are taught to make themselves feel better.

In Asia, kids do calculus for fun. In Europe, kids speak three, four languages (and often speak English with an American accent). Schoolchildren in Africa often learn about sustainability and government to an expert level, because they it might mean life or death in their nation.

In America, we have run down schools, some in rural areas lacking basic equipment, and in most, active shooter drills. You’d think that “Moms for Liberty” would be forming human chains around their kids’ schools until there were shooter-proof measures to make sure their babies weren’t slaughtered in their reading circles. But instead they’re going nuts about what books are being shared with their babies in those reading circles.

If these were just misguided, loud mouthed adults, we could roll our eyes at this latest incarnation of the long line of moms who protested co-Ed schools, sëx education, integration, and the mainstreaming of physically and intellectually challenged kids whose very presence would upset their kids.

But, unfortunately, from puberty until adulthood, life is a mine field. There are so many issues facing kids just in their own hearts we can’t begin to list the ones facing them in their homes, schools, neighborhoods, churches, souls.

When these mom groups snort and paw the air about what they deem as acceptable, millions of kids are left damaged in their wake. Every kid deserves to be educated and understood. And most of them don’t have the luxury of a mom with the hours to fight these suburban guerilla groups who think they have the right to enforce their values on millions of children who are not theirs.

Phyllis Schlafley did similar stunts in the 1970’s. Family this, family that. A woman with a law degree who insisted all women should be stay at home moms. But she was targeting adult women. These women are coming for our kids, and the public schools we finance. Hard to believe that in 2023 another group of bored white women are filling their free time by being bullies, and doing it with such mean girl self righteousness.

But look at the photo. They think this is still high school, and they’re the popular members of the steering committee. God save us all from bored adults with their noses in the air, who don’t understand how to be anything but nasty.
