Slugging 101: A Practical Guide to Car-Free Commuting
As more commuters look for smarter alternatives to driving alone – especially with return to office and increasingly congested traffic – slugging has re-emerged as a highly-effective form of commuting smarter, not harder. While it may be unfamiliar to some, slugging has been a long-standing transportation option in DC. Learn more about what slugging is, how it works, and how you can get started on your slugging journey.
What is Slugging?
Slugging, also known as casual carpooling or instant commuting, is when drivers pick up passengers (called “slugs”) from designated locations so they can qualify for high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement where drivers get access to faster lanes during rush hour and passengers get quicker and cost-free commutes. Win-win.
When setting up this arrangement, no money is exchanged and no formal scheduling is set up. It’s completely spontaneous and operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is, though, a very orderly system that has established rules, etiquette, and specific pick-up and drop-off points.
How Does it Work?
Slugging is just as easy as scheduling a rideshare like Lyft or Uber:
- Pick a route: Identify a slug line near your home (look for Park & Ride lots or commuter bus stops) that matches your exact destination or an easily commutable area near your destination.
- Wait at the designated location: Slug lines operate on an honor system. Drivers arrive at the slug line inbound or outbound locations. Some of these points have signage indicating it’s a slug line point, while others, mostly outbounds located in the city, don’t. Once there, drivers call their destination something like “Gallery Place” or “Metro Center”. The first people in line going to that area get in the car. (Note: Always get clarification confirming the drop-off location.)
- Commute: Once you’re in the car, just sit back and enjoy the ride to your drop-off point!
While arranging your slug commute may be a breeze, getting back may be difficult, as rides tend to be less consistent. We suggest combining the system with buses, trains, or rideshare to ensure you have a reliable and flexible return option, especially during off-peak hours or if you’re leaving work later than usual. Planning ahead with a backup mode of transportation can help you avoid being stranded and keep your car-free commute stress-free.
