/gsg/ — Grand Strategy General: If you see a gibberish post, it was made by raiders, ignore it. No, Vic 3 is not good yet. In fact it never will be. Neither will EU5. How fares your empire, /gsg/? On this day in history, the 3rd of January: 250 – Emperor Decius orders everyone in the Roman Empire (except Jews) to make sacrifices to the Roman gods. 1521 – Pope Leo X excommunicates Martin Luther in the papal bull Decet Romanum Pontificem. 1777 – American forces under General George Washington defeat British forces at the Battle of Princeton. 1833 – Captain James Onslow, in the Clio, reasserts British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. 1868 – The Tokugawa shogunate is abolished; agents of Satsuma and Chōshū seize power. 1913 – Greece completes its capture of the eastern Aegean island of Chios, as the last Ottoman forces on the island surrender. 1961 – After a series of economic retaliations against one another, the United States severs diplomatic relations with Cuba. 1990 – Manuel Noriega, former leader of Panama, surrenders to American forces. 2009 – The first block of the blockchain of the decentralized payment system Bitcoin, called the Genesis block, is established by the creator of the system, Satoshi Nakamoto. 2015 – Boko Haram militants destroy the entire town of Baga in north-east Nigeria, starting the Baga massacre and killing as many as 2,000 people. 2020 – Iranian General Qasem Soleimani is killed by an American airstrike near Baghdad International Airport. Strategy Games to hone political sense: Greetings. I am looking for strategy games, preferably grand strategy, that will help hone my political abilities and train me for my future career in politics. I am looking for accurate simulations that allow access to all policies, do not enforce socialism as the default winning strategy (all Paradox games are excluded here), and do not have alt history rubbish like Latvia forming the Kurgan Empire or whatever. Just pure strategy, that will sort strong politics from weak. Thank you for your suggestions.

Best city builder in your opinion? >Cities: Skylines Shitties of them all in my opinion. In this one you have shit like 16 people living in a skyscraper and you can't even build realistic sized cities. The traffic simulation is supposed to be good but its nonsensical (drivers are incapable of changing lanes, the game puts pedestrian crossings through roundabouts etc.). >Cities: Skylines 2 Not even top tier computers can run this past a certain city size. >Simcity 4 You can build massive cities in it. Its a shame that the game was designed to build american style cities though (no mixed zones, no public housing, etc.). Game runs like shit too because of its old engine. >Citystate 2 This is the best one in my opinion. Economics makes sense and you have neat details like poor people building slums if you can't fill their housing demand either through making enough housing zones or building public housing units. There is also an entire legislation system that allows you to make anything between a communist hellhole and an anarcho-capitalist dystopia. I wish the game was moddable though.

Best TW for a complete newbie.: I've been lurking around here and people seem to mention Total War a lot. I talked to one of the guys at my local GW I know, and he recommended Medieval 2, but Rome Remastered looks pretty interesting (Rome is cool). I know basically nothing about Total War. I have only played traditional RTS games and X-COM when it comes to strategy. Which one is the better choice, or is there a better 'beginner' game out there? (I'm a zoomie btw, but I don't care what year it's from or how old it is. I generally prefer historical to Warhammer fantasy, though)

Rise of Nations: Anyone else ever play this game? Never see any threads on it but its always been one of my favorites. The CTW campaigns are incredible, immersive and all the nations pretty well balanced (fuck the mayans though). Despite a few things that could be improved it still holds up well to this day. The soundrack is also just pure soul from the very early 2000s. Was it just not that popular or am I one of the few who actually liked it?

Empire at War: are Sith not that good?: All guides i find online write that Darth Vader is one man army super unit that can take planets in ground battle at his lonesome, but i found him to be too underwhelming. what he is great blaster magnet and that's it. Emperor is kinda weak as well. Jedi hero on other hand are all fucking OP as hell. Kenobi can auto heal, is tanky as hell, way more tankier than vader anyway, Luke is very fast and you can turn invisible and run away if he's low on HP, and yoda IIRC can auto heal as well. General Veers is Empire's MVP of ground combat. he can spam units and his range is almost like artillery unit. and how you use Boba Fett in ground combat? his jetpack is good if you need to run away, but other than his flamethrower, he's just bit tankier stormtrooper (against anything other than infantry, he's useless)

R: 149 / I: 5
Dawn of War: Definitive Edition: It's unfortunate that the Definitive Edition for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War completely failed to address the biggest thing that's holding it back from unlocking its multiplayer potential. The lack of information transparency. The game tells you like 10% of the things you need to know to properly utilize your units. >This unit has armor type (Heavy) Infantry and it's good against Infantry and/or Heavy Infantry. Majority of units in the game, but there's a huge difference in how and why they are effective against Infantry or Heavy Infantry. Then you get situations where you are clueless until you experience it, if you see then comparatively unique armor types like Commander or Daemonic, and even then it makes a big difference on what kind of unit is having this armor type. The most straightforward group is Vehicle armor type - most units that claim to be good against Vehicles are, in fact, good against the Vehicle armor type. But some of them are also great at ruining infantry compositions despite not being good against them, some are useless against infantry unless it's a small unit size squads... etc etc. I think it would've been much better if the game just straight up listed the weapons the units use and explained exactly how each weapon type generally works and what are the weapon's advantages and disadvantages. Like get rid off "this unit is good against X" and instead "this unit has [weapon], which is effective against [armor type AND what quantity/quality we're talking about][+ any special ability of the unit's weapons]. And then, instead of blindly relying on vague "good against" tips, you can go down into the minutia/balance issues, how the Heavy Bolter for Space Marines is actually superior to Plasma Guns in 99% of cases because the Plasma Guns don't do enough damage in their niche, and their only real advantage is that you can fire them (very inaccurately) on the move, unlike Heavy Bolters which need to be set up. We need a Spirit of the Dawn.

This game has spoiled me as far as QoL in gaming goes I don't care if you like it or not, if you're a SucKom moldy sandwich hugger or campaignlet or whatever, what I'm saying is that the QoL that this game has introduced is by far the best experience in controlling anything in an RTS and makes me uncomfortable to play anything else now. I want this level of easiness to play to another game like Age of Empires or even Starcraft clones. Runs on any potato seamlessly with 8v8 people as well, looks incredible, is a proper sandbox and supports modding as well on top of being free. But I don't want more BAR. I want others to realize how much they have been sucking lately and how mogged can they be. I want more RTS with different flavors and rules in my life, not only more TAs, but with this level of quality.

Early 00's strategy game that I haven't seen anyone mention in my entire adult life. I remember it being unique because you public opinion was a key currency. As totally-not-NATO that involved airlifting civilians out of conflict zones, and as the bad guys it involved sending TV crews to film you blowing up enemy troops and enemy atrocities. The better your rep, the more advanced units you could bring in. Actually pretty surprised few games tried to make public opinion part of gameplay. when balancing RTS should the dev focus on only the top players as they are fully capable of knowing the ins and outs of the game or should every player (or let's say every player with a certain amount of matches) be taken into consideration? personally i lean towards option 1 but I've witnessed plenty cases where the top 1% have a "no fun allowed" mindset and where they even abuse some rare bug that only they know how to (fairly) reliably trigger

Hi everyone, I am working on an early concept for a post apocalyptic city builder inspired by classic Fallout style games and I would love to hear honest feedback from players. The idea is a city builder where you create and manage your own settlement in a harsh wasteland. You build districts, defenses, infrastructure and deal with morale, resources and events. Combat would be turn based and tactical, inspired by the first Fallout games, and directly connected to how you design your settlement. The game would feature different factions with unique mechanics, for example Wastelanders, Vault Dwellers, Super Mutants, Ghouls and a technology focused military faction. Each would play very differently, not just cosmetically. At this stage I am mostly trying to understand one thing. As a player, would you be interested in a game like this. What would make you want to play it. What would immediately turn you off. Do you prefer deeper city management or more focus on exploration and combat. Any thoughts are welcome. Brutally honest answers included. Thanks for reading.

most wasted video game franchise?: i love the idea of a city builder where you simultaniously rule a whole country, there is so much potential for political and economic simulation, yet they waste it by repeating the same shit over and over again (adding a few improvement like ferries and bridges betwen the games) and ad gimmicky shit (like drones, twitter clones, floating cities egc) in cashgrab dlc's. also the humor/satire has been fucking authrocious in the two latest tropico games, especially tropico 6

What are some RTS games that actually have decent AI difficulty scaling? As in, it's not just passive on easy and hyperaggressive on hard (and hyperaggressive+cheating on very hard), but actually seems to use some strategy as you increase the difficulty level? Seems like all the good singleplayer RTS games just have good campaigns but nobody plays skirmish.

I found the best seed in 2026 for scp containment breach.: While the seed "8827hs" (also "8827hs6") is not one of the "official" god tier seeds that most people use, i describe it as a god-tier seed. Its popularity stems from several layout anomalies that bypass standard game progression, making it arguably the most efficient seed for a Safe mode run while still working in 2026 (most commonly recommended for beginners): Key Features of Seed 8827hs(6) * The Level 5 Advantage: One of the rarest occurrences in the game is finding a Level 5 Keycard as a natural spawn in Light Containment. While keycards are usually upgraded one by one or found in dangerous Heavy Containment zones (like SCP-106's chamber), this seed I hail for placing high-tier items in very accessible early rooms. * Optimal SCP-914 Placement: The refinery is positioned exceptionally close to the starting SCP-173 containment room. This allows you to secure upgrades for your gas mask (for infinite sprint) and S-NAV almost immediately upon starting the breach. * Delayed SCP-106 Spawns: In most runs, SCP-106 spawns based on a hidden timer, typically appearing within 12–17 minutes. This seed’s specific layout often delays his active hunting phase, giving you a much quieter early game to gather resources. * Bypass SCP-966: I often favor this seed because it can generate a path that allows you to bypass the maintenance tunnels or the specific chambers where SCP-966 typically spawns. This removes one of the most annoying invisible threats in the game. * The Easiest Route: The corridors are structured linearly, leading almost directly from Light Containment to the checkpoints. This is why i think it is the best seed for a Gate B escape, as it minimizes the need to backtrack through maze like heavy containment sections. * Key Spawns Early On: Many key items (such as gas mask and night vision) spawn early on, gas mask can be found in SCP-049's and SCP-419's chambers along with night vision, S-NAV, and others.

Turn-based or RTS: Do you ultimately prefer turn-based or real-time strategy games, and which are your favorites? RTS has always filtered me hard, having to juggle multiple things going on all in real time is tough (maybe this thread can change that). So for me with turn-based it's: >Master of Orion II >Civ IV >Conquest of Elysium games I am learning Shadow Empire now and it's a lot

Marvel Midnight Suns is a fun game. Held back by terrible fucking dialogue. Cringe Millennial writing. And using outdated meme Internet speak. But the gameplay is so fucking good. If they had a spine and hired real writers. I would argue that Midnight Suns is one of the most challenging Marvel games of all time. Fuck fuck FUCK why did these writers have to fucking spew their Millennial writing all over this game? It fucking pisses me off.

>starting a new country from nothing is fun >exploring the map is fun >claiming valuable land and resources is fun >developing your economy and infrastructure is fun >defending your borders from barbarians is fun >fun stops when you get to war because while you were busy building a nice country another player was just spamming troops and rushing military technologies so you just get stomped with doomstacks for merely existing I genuinely wish there was a game that was based ONLY around this early phase of every civ game where you explore the map, expand your borders and grow your economy without the part where some agressive player rapes you. Hardest RTS campaigns?: I'm currently playing Earth 2140 on NORMAL and holy fuck. I'm 20 hours in and haven't finished the UCS campaign yet. Granted, some missions were harder than needed because I didn't realize you could call in reinforcements on some maps, BUT >Maps are a grind and sometimes come down to who runs out of resources first >I'm convinced the Devs are downright evil. They know the pathfinding for UCS mechs sucks, and the maps are a combination of chokepoints, cliffs, and destroyable terain you have to manually target. UCS air sucks so you have to grind them down with mechs all the time if you don't have the SHADOW vehicle that gives stealth to your mechs >One of the Scandinavia missions has you approach an enemy base from two sides with a 1 tile chokepoint on each sides. Your mechs stack up and die really easily. The UCS navy sucks, and you don't have air in that mission forcing you to grind them down wave by wave hoping to snipe some of their important buildings >Many missions start you in the middle between multiple enemy bases and they assault you immediately. >Constant raids by enemy air and land transports full of infantry that capture your buildings and blow them up. >Also, if the objective is to capture a building and you take it, they'll actively try to retake it and blow it up, failing the mission for you. >Scripted attacks all over the place This truly was a time when devs didn't give a fuck. I've heard that the Warcraft 2 expansion is hard but I haven't played it. Recommend some ball busting campaigns

Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg bread: Linux edition: While I am aware that both games are different and people who like one, might dislike the other, to me they are inseparable. Think of na era in gaming history, when people tried to take make cool and unique stuff and wonderful games were created. Anyway, for those unfamiliar or returning: >where to get games? GOG or Steam, with GOG being preferable or just sharpen you cutlass. >which are worth getting? The original BK (comes with expansions) and SS Gold (included Forever) is where it's at. SS2 is revered, but has the mission pack syndrome of being aimed at veterans (hard) and Resource War doubles down on that while adding some RTS mechanics and fuel tedium, included in GOG's SS2Gold. Blitzkrieg 2 is full 3D, but not as good as the original. Destruction is great, but infantry models and animations are ass. Gameplay can be salvaged by mods. Sudden Strike 3 is also 3D and was shit on release due to unit pathfinding, which was fixed in the expansion that also patched the base game. Still content is slim, mostly long and tedious mission with shit like infinitely re-spawning tunnel-japs. >what about Blitzkrieg 3 and Sudden Strike 4? BK3 is complete trash that doesn't work on many systems anymore, avoid. SS4 is a more arcadey take on Sudden Strike, think Codename Panzers? The base game sucks, but the expansions are kind of ok, just don't pay full price of the it. >Mods? https://www.sudden-strike-maps.de/ https://www.blitzkrieg.be/bkmods Many recent SS mods are standalone games. >Linux? Yup, on Steam use older Proton and on Lutris Proton-GE works fine for both series, default wine doesn't. One thing to know is that some SS standalone mods like RWM 8.5 have the default exe being a lanucher and it won't work, you need to copy the files from game\code\release to \game and use game_exe.exe as the executable.

Not playing the game is more fun than actually engaging.: The gameplay of E*5 was fun for a while, but it takes a short time to learn the ropes, you quickly realise there is Little to challenge you since, in classic strategy gamę fashionable, the AI is braindead and has to rely on arbitrary modifiers on higher difficulties to keep the Player challenged in any way. I would say this is an issue with paradox but honestly, look at something like civ, the last game where the ai was in any way decent would be something like alpha centuri. But regardless of who's fault it is, it has Been only a few months and you know damn well that people are scraping the bottom of the barrel for entertiantiment from this game when they're ALREADY doing the whole "playing tall" dance to try to milk some sort of challenge out of the game. It's honestly sad, when I see this type of shit posted in Vic*oria 2 discussion I get it, there is fuck all to do in that game so your only ways of milking engagement out of it is by limiting yourself to 1 or 2 states. Same with &&4. But with it happening so soon to **5, I can't help but feel like this is a massive failure on the game's part. If people are electing to playing in 1 province and speed 5-ing through the game until they quit, I can barely call that a game at that point.

WMMA5: WMMA5 is a game by sherdog studios where you basically play as Dana White booking fights. This game is really good all things considered, I downloaded a mod where you start in 1993 at the "dawn of MMA" with all real fighters and faces. MMA promotions will open and close on their own and sign fighters who all appear in the free agent pool. The game is extremely in depth and the way I like to play is to control 2 companies at once and book everything myself turning off any other companies form showing up. Currently I'm in 1994 with 1chanpion in each promotion in my open weight division (I'm planning to open up regular weight divisions around the year 2000) and each of my champions are crowned in a 1 night yearly tournament followed by 4 shows to determine your entry to the tournament. Game is pretty fun a lot more slow pace but it's fun to re write MMA history. Fight engine is just text but it's surprisingly very in depth

AOE2/WC3 Hybrid: I am currently in the early stages of developing a real-time strategy game that aims to combine elements from Age of Empires II and Warcraft III. Both of these titles have had a major influence on me as a player and as a designer. Age of Empires II is remarkable for its strategic depth, focus on economic management, and large-scale battles, although I have always felt it is somewhat limited in a few key areas, such as unique unit mechanics and hero-focused gameplay. Warcraft III, on the other hand, introduced those very features through its heroes, abilities, and more character-driven armies, yet it lost some of the depth found in other systems, particularly in the balance of ranged units, counter mechanics, and naval warfare. My goal is to create a game that brings together the strongest qualities of both styles. I want to capture the grand scale and tactical complexity of Age of Empires II while incorporating the individuality, progression, and fantasy-driven personality of Warcraft III. The idea is to give players the satisfaction of building a thriving civilization and commanding large armies, while also offering memorable units, meaningful choices, and greater variety in strategy. I would love to hear from the /vst/ community about what you would like to see in a project that blends these two approaches. Which mechanics or ideas from either Age of Empires II or Warcraft III do you think are essential to preserve, improve, or completely rework? I am also open to suggestions for other RTS games that might serve as good sources of inspiration. Whether they are classic titles or more recent releases, I would really appreciate your thoughts on what makes those games stand out and what lessons they might offer for this project. Thank you in advance for your insights. I am looking forward to hearing your ideas and discussing what could make an RTS like this both exciting and rewarding to play.

You get them with Apprentice as is, the big medieval econ tech, sure they require iron, but they're still a bit too accessible and they kinda squash the earlier eras. my idea >Blue moving men at arms from Apprentice to Military Engineering. >Green adding Engineering and Mathematics as prereqs for Castle(and Coursers) >Red adding Iron Working as a prereq for Military Engineering adding Machinery as a prereq for Gunpowder Halberds and Crossbows might still be too easy to get, and Men At Arms is still kinda accessible, but at least it's not bundled with the great economics techs. I think this would make the games play a bit better, and it's not too arbitrary. I know you have to handwave the techs a little at times, and figure when a tech is named after a subject they're trying to refer to a certain level of expertise in the subject, but still I think you can tune it a little better without it being too messy. With the units and number of techs that exist in the game, maybe it isn't possible to really rearrange things in a fully satisfying way, but Men At Arms have felt especially awkward. Which tech tree grievances do you have?

My brain wants to implode like that submarine from years ago: Well I have a situation and I need your help A couple of days ago I re-downloaded Beholder to replay it and I'd forgotten about this character. I've just grown fond of her and I don't want her to get arrested. The thing is, for those who don't know the game, I'll give you a summary; basically, this lady was the wife of a violent man, and in an attempt to escape, she arrives at the apartment building that you are in charge of managing. There are two paths: in one you help her get a gun and she kills her husband but is arrested, or you don't help her and she must escape again to hide somewhere else Browsing the wiki, I came across a section that mentions it's possible to get her husband arrested, but this is the fifth time I've tried and it always ends the same way: she shoots him and ends up arrested. I can't refuse to give her the gun because then she'll leave the apartment and I haven't found any tutorials on YouTube that show any way to save her

IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre is in major financial trouble.: It's only natural that investors now recoil at the thought of putting money in an RTS after the catastrophic failure of that which will not be named. Devs are now trying to impress people with yet another showcase tournament that focuses on e-sports hype.
