A visitor from mainland China has been found safe after he reportedly went missing on Lamma Island whilst hiking on Saturday.
Police told HKFP on Wednesday that a search and rescue team had been trying to find the 52-year-old hiker after they received a report on Sunday that he had gotten lost.
Zheng To, 52, had been staying at a Kwun Tong hotel on a business trip and had told colleagues he planned to hike on Lamma, according to the South China Morning Post. A search involving a helicopter ensued.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Lamma’s District Councillor Lau Shun-ting said that the man had been found. “We have received notification from the police that the individual who went missing while hiking on Lamma Island on September 14, 2025, has been successfully located today, September 17. Their physical condition is normal,” the post read.
A Facebook post from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club said that Zheng was rescued by Anton Aleshin, the owner of a catamaran. It quoted Aleshin as saying that he rounded the southwestern tip of Lamma at around 10am on Wednesday.
“Suddenly, a faint whistle rang out over the roar of the surf. I remembered stumbling across a disturbing post on Instagram the previous evening: a Chinese tourist lost on the island. What a coincidence!” Aleshin said.
“Two hundred metres from the cliffs, a figure flickered in the gray-blue shadows: a man waving his arms furiously, desperately trying to escape his invisible confinement… I called my friend Masha — she was already on the line, quickly arranging a meeting with emergency services on the beach near the power station.”
He added that he introduced Zhang to the joys of sailing as they returned to Yung Shue Wan.
Police were unable to confirm the details with HKFP as of Wednesday lunchtime.
