The septuagenarian, who allegedly failed to stop in time and crashed into the two stationary private cars, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to United Christian Hospital unconscious. He was pronounced dead at 12.14am.

The two private car drivers were also taken to the same hospital after sustaining injuries.

The 41-year-old driver was travelling along Kwun Tong Bypass towards Yau Tong when his vehicle reportedly rammed into another private car driven by a 43-year-old.

The drivers of the private cars stopped and exited the vehicles before the cabbie crashed into the two stationary cars.

“At 11.05pm yesterday, a private car driven by a 41-year-old man was travelling along Kwun Tong Bypass towards Yau Tong. It reportedly rammed into another private car driven by a 43-year-old man,” read a police statement on Monday morning.

“When the two drivers alighted from their vehicles for checking, a taxi driven by a 72-year-old man suspectedly failed to stop in time and rammed into the two private cars,” it said.

The two drivers, along with a 43-year-old taxi passenger and three passengers in the private cars aged 4 to 45, were taken to hospital after they sustained injuries to their faces, shoulders, hands and legs. A three-year-old girl in the private car was not injured.

The Kowloon East special traffic investigation team has launched an investigation.
