The Development Bureau has suspended the contractors and subcontractor involved in a fatal work accident on Sunday in Hong Kong’s Southern District.
According to a statement on Monday, the bureau has notified the contractors and subcontractor “involved in a July 27 fatal industrial incident at a public works construction site in [the] Southern District, suspending them from tendering for public works contracts with immediate effect.”
A lift technician, surnamed Leung, died on Sunday after being crushed by an elevator at Queen Mary Hospital, a public hospital in Pok Fu Lam, in the Southern District.
According to the statement, both the contractors and subcontractor were on lists approved by the bureau.
Additionally, the contractors and subcontractor are to conduct an independent safety audit to review their safety management systems and implement improvement measures before the bureau can consider lifting their suspension.
The bureau also said it would consider imposing further regulatory action on the contractors and subcontractor, subject to the findings of the Labour Department’s investigation.
According to the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, the Sunday incident was the ninth fatality in the construction industry since the beginning of the year.
