At around 7.24 am on Thursday, police received reports of the pileup near Shap Pat Heung Interchange on the highway.

The accident involved four private cars, two light-duty trucks, and a heavy-duty truck, the Hong Kong Police Force told HKFP.

Online videos showed a refrigerator truck, which crashed into a light-duty truck, emitting white smoke and its front part severely damaged.

Local media reported that the refrigerator truck’s driver was trapped in the vehicle for about half an hour before he was rescued by fire services officers.

He was unconscious when he was sent to Pok Oi Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead.
