A man has died after stabbing a police officer outside Sogo mall in Causeway Bay and then stabbing himself.

The men were seen lying in pools of blood after the incident, which took place at around 10pm in the busy shopping district according to police.

According to Oriental Daily citing a source, the suspect stabbed himself in the chest after injuring the officer’s left shoulder blade.

Police said on Facebook that the officer suffered a serious injury: “The police strongly condemn such violent acts which seriously endanger the lives of others.”

Police told HKFP that the suspect was unconscious when he was taken to hospital, whilst the police officer was conscious.

A Ruttonjee Hospital spokesperson confirmed with HKFP that the male suspect was pronounced dead at 11:20pm.

Officers cordoned off the scene to carry out an investigation whilst the new police chief Raymond Siu arrived.

It came as police thwarted protests during the July 1 Handover anniversary, and exactly a year after an officer was stabbed during demonstrations in 2020.
