A magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook Hongkongers from their sleep in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory said that it occurred at 2:29 a.m. near the coast of southeastern China, 92 km east-northeast of Hong Kong.

“The Observatory received over 8,000 locally felt reports of minor shaking, the duration of which was a few seconds,” the Observatory said. “Initial estimate[s] gave a local intensity of IV (four) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, that is hanging objects swing. Windows, dishes, doors rattle.”

On social media, some mistook the tremors for the wind, whilst others thought they were dreaming or that the shaking was caused by a ghost.

It also appeared to startle some residents’ pets.

“The first time I felt the earthquake, I thought the ghost was under the bed,” wrote one Twitter user.

“My dog pounced on me in confusion, it was super effective,” wrote another.
