A parked double-decker bus plunged into a five-metre sinkhole at around 5 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Photos shared online showed the Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) vehicle with its front wheels hanging in the air, and the rear of the bus sunken into the hole, at the KMB Tseung Kwan O depot.

No injuries were recorded as a result of the incident.

According to HK01, bus company staff noted subsidence at the depot at around 4:30 a.m. The firm will follow up on the incident with government departments.

Sinkholes – which can occur suddenly – are caused by the collapse of a surface layer, often as a result of water infiltration.

In recent years, sinkholes have appeared at the West Kowloon Cultural District construction site, as well as in the middle of the busy Queen’s Road Central thoroughfare.
