Chan, who is a board member of the rights NGO Big Love Alliance, was arrested after taking part in a primary election organised by pro-democracy parties in July 2020.

He was the only openly-gay lawmaker in the legislative council and often advocated equality for the LGBT+ community. The democrat faces trial under the national security law next year after being released on bail in September.

“Even the most difficult times can’t stop you from making the most important promise in your life, to love the one next to you, and live beautifully,” said Brian Leung, who was hosting the ceremony in Hong Kong.

Equal marriage has not been legalised in Hong Kong, though is legal in the US.
