One person died on Monday and at least two have been injured in a fire at a cold storage unit in Yau Tong.

According to local media reports, the police and firefighters received multiple reports of the blaze at the Yue Xiu Cold Storage and Warehousing building in Tung Yuen Street at 1.51 p.m. The Fire Services Department deployed one jet and three breathing apparatus teams to put out the fire.

A spokesperson for the Fire Services Department told the press at the scene they had been informed there were eight workers in the building when the fire broke out, five of whom were working in the basement.

Firefighters helped an injured worker escape from the building’s staircase and found two others unconscious in the basement. All three were sent to the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where one was certified dead. The other two were in “critical” and “severe” conditions, according to local media.

Because the building was under demolition, it was “filled with sundries” which emitted “thick smoke and poisonous gas when burnt” and which made putting the fire out “slightly difficult,” the spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
