The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted the T8 storm signal on Saturday morning as Tropical Cyclone Lionrock strengthened, combining with the northeast monsoon.
“Lionrock’s circulation is rather broad. Under its combined effect with the northeast monsoon, strong to gale force winds prevail over Hong Kong, with occasional storm force winds on the high ground over the southwestern part of Hong Kong,” the Observatory said.
All ferries are cancelled, though MTR services will remain in place. All day schools and Covid-19 vaccination centres are suspended.
The Observatory added that another storm is brewing near the Philippines: “A dry continental airstream will bring generally fine weather to southern China early next week. Tropical Cyclone Kompasu is expected to develop progressively and move towards the vicinity of the Luzon Strait in the next couple of days.”
On Friday, a worker died after a building’s scaffolding collapsed in Happy Valley during the heavy winds.
The T3 signal is expected to replace the T8 by early afternoon.
