Hongkongers were surprised to observe hail in Tseung Kwan O on Thursday, despite temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius.
The hailstones are the first to be noted in Hong Kong in five years. They have only been observed 11 times since the turn of the millennium, according to the Observatory, and usually occur in April.
Social media videos shot in Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O appeared to show a mix of rain and hail hitting windows during an Observatory thunderstorm warning.
The Observatory said that the weather is expected to remain fine over the coming days: “The broad area of low pressure to the east of the Philippines is expected to enter the central part of the South China Sea over the weekend to early next week and bring unsettled weather to the region.”
Tropical Storm Chanthu is set to move towards the Korean Peninsula and Japan over the coming days.
