An online fundraising campaign to help Covid-19 stricken Nepal has been launched by a group of veterans from the British Garrison in Hong Kong, along with Sean Hotung, descendent of the city’s philanthropist Ho Tung.
In a joint effort by the Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen’s Association (HKESA), Hotung, and his wife Mary Jean Hotung, a campaign was launched on the fundraising site FringeBacker to help cover the cost of supplies, including medicine and other medical supplies.
The group had previously sent oxygen tanks and testing kits to Nepal last week. The campaign had raised HK$821,225 at the time of writing on Wednesday.
Over the past month, the country saw over 20,000 new coronavirus infections. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Nepal has reported over 658,000 cases and over 9,400 patients have died.

“Our connection with the Nepalese and the Gurkhas dates back to the 1950s. We have a very long working relationship with them and I urge the Hong Kong people to continue to support us,” said the chairperson of HKESA, Albert Lam.
During colonial rule, Gurkha soldiers served in the British garrison in Hong Kong. They also fought in the first and second world wars. Those who had served in the garrison were granted the right of abode in the city following Hong Kong’s handover to China.
