Hong Kong police have arrested a man for murder and arson after his girlfriend and her two children, aged eight and 13, were stabbed before their subdivided flat in Tai Po was set ablaze early Monday.

Police first received reports of a fight in the flat in the Mei Wan Building near the Tai Po Hui Market. The fire started minutes after they arrived at the scene at about 2 a.m., HK01 reported.

The 42-year-old woman and her two daughters were found with knife wounds. Her boyfriend was taken to hospital after he was discovered semi-conscious from inhaling smoke

“Police officers sped to the scene and located a 62-year-old man at the rear staircase of the building while his girlfriend and her two daughters were found collapsed at the unit,” a police statement said.

“Initial investigation revealed that the man had a dispute with his girlfriend. He later assaulted his girlfriend and her two daughters with a knife and set a fire inside the unit. Police later arrested the man for murder and arson. He is being detained for inquiries,” it added.
