Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Central 2021 are underway at the Convention & Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
Both exhibitions were cancelled in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, but they returned with smaller scale events this year.
Across two halls, the events showcase dozens of local and international galleries.
Art Basel involves over 100 galleries from 23 countries and territories.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Thursday that this week’s arts events marked “Hong Kong’s gradual return to normality,” along with the French May Arts Festival and the UCI Track Cycling Nations Cup Hong Kong held last week.
It is the first time the fairs have been held since the onset of the national security law last June, but Art Basel’s Asia director Adeline Ooi told RTHK this week that it was “business as usual.”
Some gallerists interacted with VIP buyers via private “hologram viewing sessions” whilst international buyers were shown around via video call.
Both events at the Wan Chai exhibition centre are sold out.
