Last Saturday in Manhattan, New York City, nearly 300 activists gathered to rally for Taiwan’s global recognition as a country and to stand in solidarity with pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. Photographer Jimin Kim was on the scene.
The demonstrators called for Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations and for Hong Kong to be free from Chinese suppression.
Attendees also rallied for an end to human rights violations against Uighur Muslims and Tibetans in China by the Chinese Communist Party.
Activist groups present included Keep Taiwan Free, NY4HK — New Yorkers Supporting Hong Kong, Uighur Human Rights Project and Students for a Free Tibet.
The march gathered at Astor Place in downtown Manhattan, where speeches were made and attendees stuck Post-It Notes to a Lennon Wall expressing support for both Hong Kong and Taiwan. The march began shortly after.
Protestors then walked up to Times Square and headed west to the Hudson River.
The march ended by the river with speeches and a demonstration in front of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York.
