Tommy Fung’s latest surreal take on Hong Kong urban life was posted to Instagram on Wednesday, showing hundreds of colourful “Lennon Wall” messages voicing support for the recent anti-extradition law protests.

Fung said he was inspired by the message boards that had taken over communities across the territory.

“They are all real sticky notes written by citizens,” he told HKFP, adding that it took him 20 hours to complete.

“I spent two days taking photos of different Lennon Walls. The main one that I used for this artwork was taken at Fortress Hill – at that moment, it hadn’t any plastic covering the wall – that was exactly what I was looking for,” he said.

The messages are also based on post-it notes displayed in Fortress Hill, Causeway Bay, Tsuen Wan, Lai Chi Kok and Mong Kok.

“It’s fascinating to see how the protest is becoming a massive expression of art! Every single Lennon Wall is unique – they have their own personality. They are growing, they are transforming, they are fighting to be alive,” Fung said.

When HKFP asked what his message was to protesters – he told them to “add oil.”

“Never give up!,” he said. “To Carrie Lam: listen to the people and respond to every single petition clearly and directly.”
