An Afrikaner who came to the U.S. after President Donald Trump claimed the country would be a safe haven for people like him has been held in federal detention for months since his arrival.

Benjamin Schoonwinkel came to the U.S. in September, believing he would be protected after Trump’s many statements to that effect. But on arriving at an Atlanta airport, he was detained and handcuffed by the U.S. border agents whom Schoonwinkel told he was seeking asylum.

The South African man was transferred to a federal detention facility within two days and has remained there ever since. After leaving behind a life of relative comfort on the word of Trump, he now sleeps on a metal bunk bed.

“I never expected this to happen,” Schoonwinkel said in a video interview with The New York Times this month. “I expected a little bit of red tape.”

Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia has about 2,000 other occupants, most of whom were taken there as a result of Trump’s immigration crackdown. Schoonwinkel says the fact that he is white has perplexed his fellow detainees, most of whom are of Latin American descent.

“They all ask me, ‘What are you doing here?'” he said.

Schoowinkel’s race also stunned his lawyer, Marty Rosenbluth, who, upon taking the case, “assumed he was Black.”

“Why else would he be in ICE custody?” said Rosenbluth. “It never crossed my mind he could be Afrikaner. I thought, how could this be happening?”

Rosenbluth said he knew of Trump’s open-door policy toward Afrikaners. The president has consistently claimed that white Afrikaners are victims of “genocide” and are having their land seized by the government, despite facts to the contrary.

Schoonwinkel’s case directly mirrors the president’s words. His asylum application has notarized proof of an attack on his person and looting of his property in what he says was a racially motivated attack last year.

“This is the most winnable asylum case I have ever had,” Rosenbluth said. “All I have to do is present all of Trump’s rhetoric, and everything his administration has been saying, about South Africa.”

Trump has taken steps to welcome them into the country in a series of moves. In February, he ordered that all foreign assistance to South Africa be halted and that the government promote the “resettlement of Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination.” The president also claimed that the U.S. did not attend the Group of 20 (G20) held in South Africa last month because the government “refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Rights Abuses endured by Afrikaners.”

It was these actions that prompted a friend of Schoonwinkel, Rick Taylor, to encourage him to come to the U.S.

“When I saw President Trump brought some Afrikaners to the U.S., I contacted Ben,” said Taylor.
“I said, ‘I think this is a good time for you to come here.’”

But despite Trump’s promises, Schoonwinkel has remained in custody for months, with Rosenbluth claiming he has received no response to his emails to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rosenbluth was eventually informed that upon claiming asylum, Schoonwinkel’s tourist visa was revoked.

Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin echoed this in her statement to The Times.

“Anyone who claims asylum at a port of entry is subject to mandatory detention while the government investigates their claims,” she said. “If their claims are found to be valid, they will be granted relief. If they are found to not be valid, they are swiftly removed.”

A hearing for Schoonwinkel’s case is set to be held next month.

MAGA Will Probably Be Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Uncomfy With This Report On How Trump's Economy Is Doing

Hi there, my name is Alexa, and for each month of Donald Trump's presidency, I'm tracking the real numbers achieved by his administration on BuzzFeed.

(AKA the unemployment rate, cost of eggs, gas prices, inflation, the Dow Jones, whether citizens received a stimulus check, and Trump's overall approval rating.)

Earlier this month, Trump addressed the nation with a televised speech where he basically insisted that the country's economy is booming, and anyone who says otherwise is a liar, liar, pants on fire.

It wasn't exactly convincing, considering Americans are facing massive insurance hikes in 2026 because Trump and his party recently chose to allow Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire in two weeks. Likewise, our pockets are shrinking as the cost of food and living bloat.

Despite his best efforts in trying to convince citizens the economy is the "hottest" it's ever been, here's a real look at how the 79-year-old's numbers played out in November 2025 (and spoiler, it paints a very different picture):

Note: Data on inflation is released a few weeks after each month has ended, so our reports will look at the previous month's numbers.

Getting data on the unemployment rate between September and November has been plagued and vague due to the government shutdown this year. September's numbers were late. October's rate was altogether canceled, and November appears to have come in at 4.6% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For someone who brags about a booming economy, the steady increase in Americans searching for work sure doesn't bode well for the president's claims.

Ah, the price of eggs. Another cursed number.

Food indexes are also released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and so we won't be getting an October number. I can, however, report that eggs officially dropped under the $3 mark, and you can find a grade A dozen for around $2.86 on average in November.

Shifting from a positive to a negative, the cost of beef is still skyrocketing, and I continue to find that giving up red meat this year was one of the best financial decisions I've made.

If you're looking for a pound of beef, prices jumped to $6.50 on average in November.

(And yes, the government shutdown is still acting as the Ghost of Christmas past, and we will not be getting an October average here either.)

Gas is going down, though! I'm sure y'all will flood the comment section with local prices wayyyyy higher than the national average, and wish you saw numbers as low as this, but according to the Energy Information Administration, a gallon of gasoline cost around $3.179 last month.

Inflation dropped to its lowest point in months, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2.7% figure has raised a few eyebrows.

According to the New York Times, "For the inflation report, many economists were caught off guard by the way the B.L.S. handled the distortions, which is part of why they are casting so much doubt on the numbers published today."

The above is fancy speak to say that the government shutdown caused "distortions" in the data surrounding inflation, and so it may or may not paint a prettier picture than reality.

Meanwhile, the Dow Jones neither rose nor fell in November, according to Stat Muse. So, there's that.

We're approaching a full year under Trump's second presidency, and there's still no stimulus check in sight for struggling Americans. What happened to those $2,000 tariff dividend checks Trump promised on Truth Social? I haven't heard a single word of it since Nov. 9.

Trump's approval rating hit an all-time low for this term. Gallup reports that only 36% of Americans approve of how Trump's second presidency is going. It's looking BLEAK.

Those are our stats for November. Now, let's look at comments we received on our last edition in a little section I like to call ✨Comment Corner✨.

Two comments on information sharing: one mentions fake news and people avoiding truths; the other discusses biased data and external factors affecting perception
BuzzFeed

It's not uncommon for me to see comments from conservatives who claim the data presented in this report is "fake news." Usually, I point to the fact that the data is retrieved from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US Energy Administration, which fall under Trump's own administration. So, if the numbers are "fake news," that would mean these MAGA commenters believe Trump's people are spreading fake news...

Quite the conundrum there!

I appreciate the readership, regardless. <3

While most 19-year-olds choose to spend New Year’s Eve almost anywhere away from their parents, the same cannot be said for Barron Trump.

Donald Trump’s youngest son decided to see in 2026 at their tacky Mar-a-Lago party, but he didn’t look too happy about it.

While he did not arrive at the same time as his parents, Barron—usually the most camera-shy member of the Trump clan—was later photographed looking awkward at the club’s black-tie gala, standing between Donald, 79, and Melania, 55.

The trio then sat together at a table filled with white roses during the various speeches, auctions, and performances.

The party itself was pure Trump, with gaudy decorations, C-list entertainers, and a guest list that included Eric and Lara Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and conservative media fixtures—plus Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 76, and his wife, Sara.

Other attendees included D.C.’s U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro, Trump antisemitism task force chief Leo Terrell and conservative radio host Howie Carr, who shared a snap from the party on X and quipped, “where the champagne is cold, the liberals are warm… and still mad.”

Performers included Mar-a-Lago NYE party veteran Vanilla Ice, who sang Ice Ice Baby, as ICE Barbie Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem—given that nickname because of her love of dolling up for immigration raids—danced next to Trump’s awkward-looking immigration czar, Stephen Miller.

The night also featured a charity auction in which Christian worship artist Vanessa Horabuena speed-painted a portrait of Jesus, which sold for $2.75 million.

Barron’s New Year’s Eve appearance was the second public family sighting in under a week. He surfaced in the background of Instagram footage from a Mar-a-Lago Christmas Day dinner—seen chatting as guests applauded his father’s entrance—after a spell of public invisibility following revelations about the people he’s been orbiting online.

Barron has faced scrutiny over his ties to internet women-haters. It was reported last month that Barron had connections to an associate of the Tate brothers, the misogynist influencers who have faced legal scrutiny and human trafficking charges over lurid allegations made by multiple women in multiple countries. The Tates deny any wrongdoing.

James Waller—described as the “third” Tate brother after Andrew, 39, and his younger sibling Tristan, 37—claimed he advises the teenager on personal matters like dating, and said he and Barron spoke with Tate over Zoom while Barron was visiting Waller’s tailor.

The New York Times reported that the two discussed their shared belief that Romanian prosecutors charging the Tate brothers with a number of sex and trafficking crimes was an effort to silence them.

Barron’s dating life has been the subject of much speculation. In June, it was reported that the New York University student shut down an entire floor of Trump Tower for a date, citing a Page Six account that said it was done for security reasons.

The Daily Beast has contacted the White House and the Trump Organization for comment.
