Global photography movement the 24HourProject is coming to Hong Kong on Saturday, with a special focus on women’s rights.
Founded by photographers Renzo Grande and Sam Smotherman in 2012, the project has since ballooned into a global movement of 4,280 photographers in 850 cities from 104 countries. This year’s event will mark eight years since its launch.
In order to participate, each photographer must register online then share an image on social media every hour for 24 hours on Saturday according to project guidelines, with the hashtag #24HourProject. The images will be streamed by organisers live to the world, hour by hour.
Organisers said they hope to document humanity in real time during the course of the 24 hours in the largest street photography event in the world:
We connect emerging photographers, aspiring photojournalist and visual storytellers from every city of the world to document humanity and make a difference by raising awareness about global issues and empowering NGOs.
The theme of this year’s 24HourProject – women’s rights – aims to address discrimination against women and gender-based violence. According to the United Nations, it is estimated that 35 per cent of women has experienced some physical or sexual violence in their lives. While the World Economic Forum estimated that it will take 202 years to close the global gender pay gap.
Organisers of the 24HourProject partnered with non-profit organisations to raise funds for the project through a global crowdfunding campaign. Their partners include Atena in Iran, GES Mujer in Mexico, Sacred Valley Health in Peru, and She Has Hope in Uganda.
