Rae Lam is a Hong Kong-based photographer whose work is inspired by neon-noir cinematography.
Her photography focuses on urbanism.

Her photographs play with darkness and light by juxtaposing the light reflecting off tall buildings with the shadows created on the ground below.

“I intend to convey emotion through my work by using a specific colour palette, or making good use of lights and shadows,” Lam told HKFP.

“I hope my audience can feel many things deeply by viewing my work,” she said. “My biggest motivation is when my photographs evoke resonance among viewers.”

“I am heavily influenced by Wong Kar-wai’s movies and Christopher Doyle’s cinematography,” she added.

Renowned Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s films are known for their bold and bright colour palette.

Christopher Doyle is a celebrated cinematographer, known for his work on Wong Kar-wai films such as “Chungking Express” and “In the Mood for Love.”

Doyle is also celebrated for his experimental cinematic style and use of saturated light.
