Hong Kong’s Observatory raised the T1 storm signal on Saturday, but says it is unlikely that the T3 signal will be hoisted on Sunday as Tropical Storm Mawar skirts the city.
“In the past few hours, Mawar was moving steadily towards the eastern coast of Guangdong. Unless Mawar takes a track closer to Hong Kong, local winds are not expected to strengthen significantly in the afternoon,” it said.
Conditions may worsen in Hong Kong on Sunday evening, as the storm makes landfall in Guangdong. Sea swells and wind are expected, according to the Observatory.
Squally showers will remain on Monday, with sunny periods over the following days.
It is the third cyclone Hong Kong has seen in a fortnight. Typhoon Hato triggered a No.10 Hurricane Signal in Hong Kong on August 23 – the strongest storm to hit the city since 2012. Hato also brought about massive destruction in neighbouring Macau, leaving ten dead.
Just days later, the Hong Kong Observatory raised the T8 storm signal as Tropical Cyclone Pakhar moved into the vicinity, affecting around 300 flights.
