The Protect Northeast Campaign activist group has launched a letter-writing campaign for the 13 protesters jailed on Tuesday over their participation in the 2014 demonstrations outside the Legislative Council.
The demonstrations were in response to the Finance Committee chairman’s attempts to end a filibuster by the pro-democracy camp over the controversial northeast New Territories development proposal.
The activists were sentenced to eight to 13 months in jail following a successful sentence review by the Department of Justice. Amongst those jailed were Vice-chairman of the League of Social Democrats Raphael Wong, Land Justice League convener Willis Ho and activist Billy Chiu.
The group is inviting members of the public to pen letters to the activists: “Many have said that they wish to write letters… Now, the Justice & Peace Commission of the HK Catholic Diocese will arrange to pass on these letters, and help everyone deliver these letters to [our] 13 companions.”
The project allows supporters to pen letters by hand, or fill in an online Google form. Those who wish to write may also choose to make the content of their letter public.
