A tram driver was arrested on Thursday after a double-decker tram tipped over in Central, leaving 14 people injured.

The rare incident took place on Des Voeux Road in the early hours of Thursday. Police are investigating the cause, but suspect that the tram speed was travelling too fast into a turn. The driver said the tram was hit by a bus before it overturned.

Around five hours after the incident, police arrested the 23-year-old driver, surnamed Lo, for allegedly causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail and is required to report to the police next month.

Firefighters rushed to the scene three minutes after being notified. A spokesperson for the Fire Services Department said 51 firefighters and ambulance officers were deployed.

Among those injured, 11 were taken to the hospital. At the time of publication, four had been discharged and the remaining seven remain in a stable condition.

The road was closed off shortly following the incident. The tram was subsequently removed and traffic resumed as normal around 5am, HK01 reported.

Trams, known as “ding-dings” for the sound of their bells, carry around 200,000 passengers a day.
