Typhoon standby signal No.1 was hoisted by the Hong Kong Observatory on Wednesday as Tropical Cyclone Megi continues to make its way across southern China. The effect of the typhoon led to the hottest September day in 50 years on Tuesday, with a high of 36 degrees celsius.

Megi will cause strong winds and gale winds offshore and on high grounds. However, the Observatory said that the chances of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 was “not high” and that it was unlikely that strong winds would affect Hong Kong if Megi takes its projected route.

Hong Kong air remained “unhealthy” owing to the typhoon, with an air quality index reading of 160 around Hong Kong Island.

Megi swept through Taiwan killing at least four and injuring 250 on Tuesday. It also caused power outages in millions of homes.
