On August 1, the Hong Kong Observatory issued Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 8 as Typhoon Nida approached the city. After the typhoon, residents found trash washed up on many of Hong Kong’s beaches.
Local photographer Martin Williams even made a video of a “weird alien blob” attacking Hong Kong beaches after the typhoon, shot in Cheung Chau.
Typhoon Nida weakened from a severe tropical storm to a tropical storm on Tuesday.
The Observatory downgraded to strong wind signal No. 3 in the afternoon, and the No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm signal was taken down after being in force for more than 12 hours.
Local photographer Torben Kristensen took photos of the aftermath at Big Wave Bay and posted them on Facebook.
There were also reports of trash at Discovery Bay, Tuen Mun, and Ap Lei Chau following the storm.
A beach cleanup event was hosted by environmental group Hong Kong Cleanup at 9am on Saturday at Tai Long Wan on Lantau Island. The group also promoted a petition calling on the government to implement laws on refundable deposits for plastic bottles on its Facebook page.
