I’ve noticed that whenever I engage or comment on anything even that may be construed as remotely political and it’s not in full alignment with the extreme-left consensus it gets buried in downvotes.

It honestly feels like there are downvote mobs ready to crush any thought that doesn’t perfectly match their worldview, regardless of whether your point is logical or sourced. We all have bias but there is also the pursuit of truth so don’t you want to know the other side?

I’ve had well-reasoned, factual comments disappear while emotional, zero logic comments rack up +50 upvotes.

I hadn’t even realized how much my karma dropped until I tried to make a post in a personal finance sub and my post was not allowed.

I’m not someone who needs validation or internet points I just genuinely wonder if others have noticed how Reddit is one big left political echo chamber?

If you've used Wayback to look at deleted Reddit material (quite a few people have), that is coming to an end. "AI scraping" is being used as the excuse, but I suspect it is being done because Reddit employees and mods want to censor their history. As usual. And of course, they want additional $$$$ from the AI companies on the side. So they will blackmail everyone who uses Wayback.

So they're going to train an LLM on Reddit's own often-batshit content. Hell no, that's can't possibly cause any problems!! Our users are the bestest evar, and so are their sockpuppets and automated bots!

People are angry about this--but not as much as they probably should be. Karma farming has always been a part of Reddit's userbase tricks, and this will automate it to a very high level.

They don't honor free critical speech or opinions throughout their subs which are monitored but supposedly bots. They suspend whomever they feel like & let fellow friends post similar or very critical comments. You have to go through a long approval process to be able to post & can then get thrown off for critising the bots programming. This company is doomed to failure but founders don't care. They already made their fortune.

This quote says volumes:

That's not unusual for Reddit mods--seeing Nazis everywhere, while ignoring other problems.....

Reddit's paywall would ostensibly only apply to certain new subreddit types, not any subreddits currently available. In August, Huffman said that even with paywalled content, free Reddit would "continue to exist and grow and thrive."

A critical aspect of any potential plan to make Reddit users pay to access subreddit content is determining how related Reddit users will be compensated. Reddit may have a harder time getting volunteer moderators to wrangle discussions on paid-for subreddits—if it uses volunteer mods at all. Balancing paid and free content would also be necessary to avoid polarizing much of Reddit's current user base.

They already tried this--no one has any idea how profitable really is, because Huffman refused to release statistics apart from the 210,000 subscribers. All we get otherwise is "The company reported a net income of $71 million for the quarter ending December 31 and a net loss of $484.3 million for 2024. The company notably missed its global daily active uniques target (101.7 million for the quarter versus 103. million), which it attributed to ."

Partly because the current management is aggressively vanishing anything a bit controversial. "Scandals" are getting very scarce. Subreddits that used to contain crazy content are being banned for "not moderated" or some other bullshit. The front page is filling up with cute kitty pictures and posts from and the like, guaranteeing maximum boredom and shallowness.

And NO ONE is talking honestly about what's really going on. Does any remaining Reddit user really give a damn about their stock price or "shareholder value"?

They make one good point: modern Reddit is infested with bot accounts, probably run by modern AIs. Be careful the next time you get into an arguement on Reddit with someone because they might not exist.

Not only that, I tried to post this fact two days ago--and Reddit's "filters" blocked me (the moderator of this sub) from posting it. There are certain items in Reddit history that we can no longer discuss openly. Thus, I can't mention previous pro-Donald subreddits.

The website that tracked down who is now going through , a neo-Nazi group built from the ruins of the failed National Justice Party. One of them turns out to be "former" Reddit user , founder/operation of the long-banned subreddit, who in the great Reddit tradition had a large number of sockpuppets on multiple websites. He also ran a huge number of now-banned subreddits like , , , etc. You might have run across him as George Arthur, Great Ape Nifty, Atomic Liberty, Real Sven Laden, etc. He's actually the night of August 11, 2017. Interestingly enough, at he worked alongside Joshua Ryne Goldberg, one of the greatest trolls on the internet, using his handle. Goldberg later wasted a decade in jail for his Australi Witness Twitter persona, who claimed to be an Islamic State operative from Australia, and tried to set up terror attacks using that account. Just before he left prison Goldberg started a Medium site, at which of being a promoter and lover of child pornography (in fact, he did it the day after Albini died, because that's how trolls operate.)

But back to Micheal Anthony George; he is heavily involved in neo-Nazism online and at actual in-person events. He showed up at "TRSLMania" in Houston, Texas in 2017. This was a gathering of listeners/fans of The Right Stuff podcast where he got on the microphone and preached "White Sharia" (that is a concept too nasty to discuss here.) He also showed up to protest a drag brunch in Cookville, Tennessee last year. He was able to get people from the then-operating National Justice Party, Patriot Front, Tennessee Active Club, and Vinland Rebels to do a neo-Nazi street protest down the street. Like many of the movers and shakers of the neo-Nazi movement, he is involved with numerous groups using multiple handles (he has at least five handles under the name George Anthony using The Office's Kevin Malone character as an avatar on Facebook.) He tries to front as a sports dad and small time landlord, but his actual personality as a Nazi just keeps shining through.

Huffman's minions are clearly manipulating credulous financial writers, when you see crazy shit like this. Similar nonsense was in the media constantly during the late-1990s dotcom boom. Most of those hyped-up "internet empires" eventually collapsed.

Huffman really does believe he's the next Mark Zuckerberg. And I suspect the only way he has a chance of getting there, is to make Reddit an ad-saturated, AI-censored, closed social community like Facebook--you can't see anything until you log in, and you can't log in until you give them all kinds of personal information. Which will then be cheerfully sold to anyone willing to pay.

Reddit just barely gets by in its present form, with occasional scandals about bad subreddits (, ). It's still losing money. It's still to come onboard, and offering its database to AI companies for "training". Does that sound like a "trillion-dollar company" to you?

The weakness in April is typical of the general nervousness investors are showing right now about the economy and ongoing inflation. The greedy ones cashed in and bailed and screw the rest, I'm guessing. Ask a stock analyst---if you can find one who's ever heard of Reddit.

He's trying to "clean it up for advertisers". Ha ha. Steve, you arrogant little shit, you'll never be the next Zuckerberg. Your investors will probably screw you out of the company later.

What a SHOCK SURPRISE. Reddit is going to exploit their users via AI. Because IPO.

Curious. My three messages on this thread never used profanity. Never suggested anything remotely threatening. I merely concurred effectively with another poster who felt that a mod was being abusive, sexist and racist and I offered effectively my support for his complaint and my opinion that Reddit is more concerned with backing mods, than responding to concerns of users who perceive they were abused by a mod. And I expressed the honest belief - which your suspension does nothing to dispel, that if he does complain, nothing is likely to come of it, but that he ought to complain anyway as silence implies acceptance.

Do you think it’s helpful - in the big picture - to restrict reasonable conversation critical of the operation of Reddit and what appears to be rather arbitrary invocation of suspensions?

Ultimately -while I find Reddit mostly enjoyable, I think if users feel that it isn’t “safe” to offer contrary opinions - they’ll go elsewhere. Which would be unfortunate I think.

I can criticize “X” or “Facebook” all day long on their platforms and will never get banned or suspended.

Oh. BTW - “reasons” for suspension that are purely subjective, and appear to be based upon personal opinions of what’s valuable or useful are very problematic to the idea of free exchange of opinions as opposed to more common and more objective reasons such as being abusive, or expressing hate or encouraging violence - which most people would fully accept as obvious reasons for suspensions or bans.

Not seeking to start a battle or even set aside the suspension - I can live with it as odd as I think it is - I just would love to have a place where this issue could actually be discussed on Reddit as it seems to be a very real and serious concern for many users.

Apparently there was a recent silent putsch of the moderation on . And now they are swiftly banning anyone who tries to post an item about the country's massive housing shortages being partly caused by open spigots on immigration from former Commonwealth countries like India and Hong Kong---"maybe".

Instead there is just loads of vague handwringing about "failure of the marketplace" therein.

Even posting a verifiable media report about the causes of this housing shortage results in banning. I suspect these new mods are Trudeau fanboys, or possibly even Canadian government paid shills, pushing the about immigration. Maybe? And god help you if you even mention "Trudeau towns"--tent cities for people unable to find or afford housing.

Which makes it an excellent target for deletion, should the operators of successfully talk Reddit management into killing it off for the usual "vague reasons". How's this for sleazy? "AI content theft" is the perfect excuse to wall off your website. They saw Facebook and Instagram get away with this, and so "that's a GREAT idea!" This will cost them considerable traffic but apparently it doesn't matter.

The Washington Post that Reddit might cut off Google and force users to log in to Reddit itself to read anything, if it can’t reach deals with generative AI companies to pay for its data. Initially, Reddit seemed to deny the report. “Nothing is changing,” Reddit spokesperson Courtney Geesey-Dorr told The Verge, adding that the Post would soon be correcting its story.

But after the Post corrected that story, only one major detail had changed — the Post no longer suggests Reddit users would need to log in. The publication now writes that if Reddit can’t get AI to play ball, the company may block Google and Bing’s search crawlers, which means Reddit posts wouldn’t show up in search results.

In 2017, the site removed ‘just’ 4,352 pieces of content in response to copyright holders’ complaints. Fast-forward to today, and the site removes well over a million items each year for the same reason.

If you're wondering why a post you made, to a clip from a TV show or movie or whatever, suddenly disappeared with no reason given; this might be the reason. And also:

During the first half of 2023, Reddit permanently suspended the accounts of 221 users and banned 571 subreddits for excessive copyright violations. For comparison, during the same months last year, 3,859 users lost their accounts while 1,543 subreddits were banned.

When fools and money-grubbers figure out they can get PAID for their Reddit asspats in actual currency, the result will be exactly what we have already seen on YouTube with their affiliate program: millions of usually-tragic idiots frantically grinding out content for the faint hope of $. For many years Reddit suffered an only slightly overstated reputation as a social media platform preferred by edgelords and morons. There are stupid people on every platform, of course, but I’m convinced Reddit is so condescendingly regarded in polite society in large part because it operates a lot more like a traditional web forum and a lot less like the profile-centric, user-as-attraction model of most other social media. Facebook and Instagram were explicitly designed to flatter the individual user, and while Twitter loosely gestured at the deliberative ideals of a “town square,” realistically it was an attention economy with social hierarchies and professional stakes, political clout, personal brands, and “main characters.” Reddit, in contrast, is the vestige of a now very old-fashioned and tragically half-dead web ideal: low-stakes anonymity. Who you really are doesn’t really matter on Reddit. was just some guy, and was its own little subculture.

The rest of this walks the line of looking like a paid advertisement for the "glory" of the Reddit. Calling this place "the last great web community" is really pushing one's luck. It was never "great" and it won't be the last of any damn thing--I've given up counting the Reddit imitators.

The dangers of food canning were explained to me clearly, succinctly, and with cited sources by Brad Barclay and someone going by Dromio05 on Reddit (who asked to withhold their real name for privacy reasons). Both were recently moderators on the subreddit and hold science-related master's degrees.

Yet Reddit removed both moderators from their positions this summer because Reddit said they violated its . Mods had refused to end 's protest against Reddit and its new API fees; the protest had made the entire subreddit "read only." Now, the ousted mods fear that could become subject to unsafe advice that goes unnoticed by new moderators. "My biggest fear with all this is that someone will follow an unsafe recipe posted on the sub and get badly sick or killed by it," Dromio05 told me.

We will never know how many people died because of stupid things they were told to do online. I bet the number of deaths from Tiktok "challenges" is considerable. But all that has to be kept quiet. Social media really doesn't tolerate "bad news".

Reddit is set up to INSURE silence and censorship. While also posing as a place full of "experts". Especially after dumping "uncooperative" subreddit moderators. I foresee big problems for Reddit management in the near future.

HILARIOUS. One, Reddit karma and "awards" are utterly useless and worthless, other than as "proof" that Reddit's broken community "loves you". Two, we are being spoonfed important news about Reddit operations by something called "CookiesNomNom".

Even the most deluded, crazy, or drugged-out science fiction writers would not devise juvenile garbage like this and try to pass it off as "fiction". The internet has grown up and become a giant, fat, screaming child.

This is deadly-typical of how Gizmodo Media sites "cover" the "news". They can't help putting a whiny-millennial "ohgodeverythingsucks & theyremeantome" spin on every controversy--no matter how petty or stupid the story is. Obviously Reddit was destined to win, but for chrissakes, this is just lazy. Actually I'm surprised he didn't accuse Reddit management of being homophobes or anti-trans or somesuch. (Assuming "Thomas Germain" actually exists and isn't just a byline used for AI-written posts. Never know today.)

Personally, I think he is a muppet and a mediocrity as a "comedian". Political considerations aside.

Child porn, dying animals, dying children, brutal 3rd world scenes of horror, and quite a lot of literal poop. So if anyone was bothered by graphic images, they should stay well away...And because your Reddit account can be permabanned at any time by Reddit's Anti-Evil Operations bot with a modest amount of reporting from a number of sockpuppet accounts, you're not able to tell these people to fuck off and go to hell when they inevitably ask why you're discriminating against them and their sickening photos.You have to maintain a veneer of pleasantness for even the most vile photos and the most abusive Redditors because those are the people that can and will get you banned in retaliation.

I don't doubt this kind of thing happens on Reddit routinely. However....speaking personally, the only interactions I've had with subreddit moderators usually ended with abuse from them, because I posted text or a link they didn't like on "their" subreddit. It was usually personal and petty.

Either you can be abused by random basement-neckbeard volunteer mods, or by mods installed by Reddit management. Hell of a "choice".

At the time, the moderators expected to be removed after receiving a message from a Reddit admin (employee), ModCodeofConduct, telling them they would be replaced if they didn’t reopen......Now, the community’s modlist currently has just one moderator: ModCodeofConduct.

Similar things have happened on Reddit before, and it's a daily routine for Wikipedia admins. History keeps repeating itself and idiots with "special rights" on websites never remember it. Repression seems to be the default mode for social media.

I continue to suspect that Huffman and co. think they "won the war" and enough mods caved in, they can go right back to the usual shit. Subs containing "spam, misinformation, bigotry, and illegal content" are banned or forced to go private, IF THEY CAUSE BAD PUBLICITY. If they keep a low profile or find a loophole they can post all the evil crap they want.

It is business-as-usual today and no sign of a "death spiral". Reddit autist obsession will keep going. Twitter is no different. Elon can do a hundred insane things every day but people will keep logging in. They are both in that "too big to fail" mode, i suspect. Hope I'm wrong.

AGAIN I say, Reddit mods should really know by now that Huffman and his minions have NO problems with disappearing their posts and banning them for any or no reason. They serve at His Holiness's Pleasure.

Even worse, moderators are reporting that , as well as comments from angry Redditors repeating the “fuck ” mantra (“spez” being Huffman’s username). They’re posting images of the ones that they claim are deleted. It’s unclear if those are actually being deleted or what’s going on, but Huffman has admitted in the past to . And while he promised never to do it again and said he just did it out of frustration, I’m guessing he’s pretty damn frustrated right now.

Following this, another mod posted our update instead. Right after, the  [a Reddit admin account] account  and flipped the sub back to restricted instead of public. Then, the second moderator was also logged out of their account and locked out. Other mods tried to re-approve the post, one of them was promptly logged out and locked out as well.

There has been talk of things like this done before on subreddits that caused controversy. Lockouts were usually done in secret. This is not "secret".

Also: remember my mention of yesterday? Shortly after my post, they drastically revamped their front page. Adding things like Hacker News, TechCrunch, and the Onion (?!) as "news sources for aggregation" as well as refocusing on the major subreddits that remained open. For the past week its front page was almost blank AND in a different format.

Plus don't be too surprised if suddenly vanishes with no warning. Because people are using it to criticize Reddit management. They've disappeared subs like this before and they'll do it again.

This crap has destroyed the livelihoods of many people and organizations that were using Reddit content for whatever. Look at for a good example--a news aggregator that had taken top stories from subreddits. Since Sunday it was almost blank except for and items, because those two subs remained open ( was set to a static page and still is, so all those items are from Sunday/Monday). Now it's slowly returning to normal as other major subs reopen. And nearly all the Reddit smartphone apps have stopped working or been badly crippled for the past week--except for the widely disliked "official app".

Huffman is not the only turd in this pool. He knows he can pull it off because a large percentage of Reddit mods are even pettier and more arrogant than him--too busy fighting over little bits of the kingdom to notice they are being exploited by the guy in the castle. Odd how social internet ends up looking more and more feudal as it becomes more popular.

How do we know Reddit has a problem? When ADWEEK puts a major story about it on their front page. ADWEEK rarely talks about Reddit advertising, as they seem to think Reddit is a "minor website". The blackout was impossible to ignore.

The disabling/crashing of internal Reddit functions appears to have stabilized--at least on this subreddit. Working normally.

Several subreddits of more than 5 million members ( , , , , and some others ) decided to stay online and now dominate the front page. I would not be surprised if bribes were paid and arms were twisted to obtain "cooperation" from their moderators. Wondering if spez was watching how Wikipedia mantains the internal "reign of terror" to keep their users from seeing how fucked-up it really is. Because this would be classic Wikipedia style dirty trickery, the sort I would expect to see on "social media" run by volunteers.

The mods of this section DID NOT do that. It was done by Reddit management with no prior notification. All the subs I could check for information have been made private.

So they are forwarding it to a Twitch livestream. Maybe it will crash Twitch, as more idiot-filled subreddits go private? That would be incredibly lulzy.

Posted EIGHT YEARS AGO but could have been written yesterday. Reddit STILL loses money every year, making Huffman's continuing attempt to push an IPO look absurd. Ohanian was forced out and people like Ellen Pao and Victoria Taylor are barely remembered now.

The subreddit shutdown on Monday might lead to a major and permanent collapse of Reddit's user traffic. Hard to say since a website as popular as Reddit has not collapsed in this manner before (Tumblr was a fraction of Reddit's size/traffic and Myspace was quickly obsoleted by Facebook/Reddit/Twitter etc.--there's no obvious replacement for Reddit upcoming).

If this is the "end times" for Reddit, you can't claim the management didn't receive YEARS of warnings.

Not to sound like a bitter old guy but you have to keep in mind the average age of posters on here, most of them have absolutely no frame of reference for this shit. I'm not saying my generation is better in any way, but the ephemeral nature of the internet just makes it hard to keep perspective.

Like, when I was a teen there was still a strong cultural memory among people my age of the anti-DND/satanic panic shit of the 80's and 90's, when I would have been a little kid at most. I just learned about this subreddit. Started only last month, today they posted their first set of "awards". All the freaks listed are notorious Tiktok/Instagram "influencers" with millions of equally-stupid fans. The worst of 2023's social media in a convenient summary.
