This is a remux of Space Adventure Cobra from the Discotek USBD, with some extras added that weren’t included on the original release.

Video

Notes:

1. While an older scan (2010), this looks pretty good. Unlike most of the shows of this era, Cobra was done entirely on 35mm, and I imagine a rescan with modern equipment would look amazing. Some may complain about “dark detail” lost from the old DVD, but the DVD looks like it’s been brightened too much, much more than was originally intended.
2. The USBD is a reencode of the Happinet JPBD. The TV episodes use USBD as the JPBD is 100+GB bigger, and from comparing the two, the USBD looks exactly the same. Spotting the differences requires pixel peeping.

Audio

Notes:

1. Unfortunately, unlike most TMS shows from this era, magnetic elements for the Japanese track were lost in the 80s, and all releases have used audio from 16mm optical sound negatives. Fidelity isn’t terrible, but not great either. The BD audio is 640kbps AC3, and the LD audio was identical, so it’s been left alone.
2. M&E is a lossless digital transfer from LD. Unfortunately, the EMOTION release has major rot issues. Luckily, my copy had the digital tracks intact. The Rugball saga’s M&E is taken from one of the volumes of the later KSS Films seperate release, as it has no rot problems, and I managed to find a copy.
3. The Latino dub is taken from Prime Video WEB-DLs (except episode 8, which is taken from a YouTube WEB-DL). Restoration was performed in iZotope RX to manage the amount of buzzing and hissing the masters had accumulated, and as a result it’s much easier on the ears. The OP/ED themes have been replaced with recreation cuts of the insert song instrumentals the dub had originally used. Aside from the OP/ED, the dub is completely uncut. Select scenes have been spliced in with M&E to fix abnormal cutting off in the source. Syncing was very difficult. My normal method of waveform reference proved impossible due to improper transfer of the M&E tape by the dubbing team; I instead synced up the video tracks. Sync may not be perfect due to this.
4. The “Experimental” English Dub was done for the Discotek release by someone with a history of fandubbing; as a result the dub is a thing. Hope you like grunting and added Wilhelm screams

Subtitles

Notes:

1. The subtitles are remuxed, and are based on the translation done for the Nozomi DVDs.
2. The Latino Signs track subtitles the episode titles, and ports over the dub credits in the ED. Select titles have been corrected to remove grammatical/translation errors.

Extras

1. Cobra Image BGVs: These are exclusive to the EMOTION LDs, and show art from the show with music from the OST album in the background. AFAIK, this is the first time these have been uploaded.
2. OP-EDs: Creditless OPs and EDs, Credited OPs and EDs, and the Latino dub’s OP and ED
3. English Pilot Film/Promo: These were created to sell the concept of Cobra to US networks. Here’s a Facebook post from someone who claims to have directed the dubbing. I believe this was originally the Japanese pilot film, but dubbed for international use. Amazingly, the M&E tape still existed at the time of the EMOTION release, and was included on it. I’ve synced it up to the HD transfer.
