So, wait, iPads are left out of this?

This is all good news to me.
And I wanted to make a purchase based on these changes; having more games and freedom. What I was hoping for was a March release of the rumoured iPad Mini 7.

It was supposed to come with an M1 chipset, upgraded to 128GB-512GB storage, and a slightly larger 8.7 inch display. Throw that bad boy in a GameSir G8 controller, and I'd be happy playing all those classic Nintendo Wii games and earlier systems.

Even with a USD $100 price hike, it seems worth it. With the iPad Mini 6 (64GB) staying around a little longer as the budget option, next to the iPad Base 10 as the midsized budget option. But the new rumours say the iPad Mini will keep it's small 8.3 inch display, will be worse value for money, and get a paltry update to the highly disappointing A16 chipset. Even the A17-Pro when overclocked is a highly disappointing chipset, compared to the surprisingly potent A15 from a WHOLE THREE YEARS AGO. If the new rumours are true, then I recommend myself to skip this, just get an AYN Odin2, or maybe a SteamDeck OLED, or maybe the ASUS ROG Ally. I could do with a portable gaming device, outside of a pocketable gaming device, or something much larger like a Desktop PC.

I don't know how Apple can even put these stupid arbitrary conditions in place and that EU hasn't said anything about it yet is weird.

"Apple demands a "Core Technology Fee" of €0.5 for each annual install over one million in the past year."

So if I, as a small game dev, launch an app outside the curated walled garden, and it is downloaded by 1 million bots...and then another 1 million bots and then another 1 million bots, while my real life users range in the low 1000s...am I screwed?

How will apple authenticate downloads from real life users? Since I know for a fact that China and India got tons of bot farms on the iOS platforms (used for other activities, but my point stands nonetheless) and they can effectively bankrupt small devs and indie houses if they target any particular app when this policy is in effect. And before anyone chimes in, these bot farms all use verified apple id logins and stuff, since iPhones are now sold in India en masses due to how monthly installments allow people with less than 100 USD monthly income to purchase some iPhone for bragging purposes.

Or to be extra cynical, what if apple joins hands with some 3rd party "review and maintenance" company and pushes the app DL numbers into the millions over time while creating absolute zero income from any form of app sales from those bot DLs?

this is literally just like unity's installation fee, except it's annual and it affects all games and apps distributed outside of their app store.

Jon8652, 17 Apr 2024€0.5 per install is crazy bad for developers Even at 1 cent it would add up.

I just hope Google or OEMs don't follow this.

om, 17 Apr 2024Ability to know what's running on the device is equal important, ability to trust/untrust... moreI have never heard Windows to stop working if you install a 3rd party app even if its malware. I don't use facebook. facebook is definitely malware, tracker and data miner all rolled into one.

Leanzazzy, 17 Apr 2024What? All these years Apple users haven't been able to sideload apps?! Every time I learn... moreYou should also learn that Apple is anti-Android, for some reason. They purchased Dark Sky, one of the best weather and meteorologists apps on Earth. In 2020 or some time, Apple purchased the app off of the creators and shut it down for both Android and Apple. They then replaced it with WeatherKit API. They KNEW Dark Sky was better than their own shitty Weather App so they if you can't beat them? Acquire them and ban them! This is what Apple's doing now. If they can't beat the EU, then they just have to make it extremely hard to get access to the new features.

Anonymous, 17 Apr 2024Let me guess 🤔 AI Bot making comments here. Your profile picture says it all 🤨While he may not be aware of jailbreaking, he's mostly right. Android users can use fdroid, aurora store, github etc freely while IOS cannot. And that freedom also allowed Huawei users to mitigate lack of Google Services until the day Huawei comes back with its homegrown operating system.

With todays Android becomes more strict and ios becomes less strict, the difference between those 2 os becomes small. With this, maybe ill try an iphone when they globalized the feature, and see it myself how good this os is.
