Hong Kong’s migrant worker community will lead another protest against US President Donald Trump on Sunday.
The local International Migrants Alliance plans to march to the US consulate under the banner “No ban! No wall! No bigotry! Stop Trump’s Tyranny!”
Trump signed an executive order last Friday banning travellers from seven Muslim countries, suspending all admission of refugees for 120 days and banning Syrian refugees indefinitely. He has also proposed building a wall on the US-Mexican border.
‘Racial conflict and divide’
Protest organiser and domestic worker activist Eni Lestari said that Trump’s executive order is racist, anti-migrant and anti-refugee, and could encourage attacks on Muslim Americans and people of colour.
“By alluding to those believing in Islam as possible terrorists, Trump justifies racism and his actions encouraging more racial conflict and divide. He brings the ‘with us or against us’ mantra of the George W. Bush presidency, a presidency known for waging the war of invasion on Iraq,” Lestari said.
“With his policies and orders, the Trump presidency poses a threat to solidarity, racial understanding and justice that many of us uphold and promote. We will not allow this to happen,” she added.

The Alliance said that it wished to express solidarity with its member organisations in the US “as well as many organizations and individuals who joined the Women’s March and expressed opposition to Trump’s anti-migrant statements and policies.”
On Wednesday, several dozen activists attended a similar rally calling upon President Trump to scrap his immigration ban.
Governments around the world also criticised the measures, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French Foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, and British Foreign minister Boris Johnson, and the Arab League expressing disapproval.
Sunday’s rally is set to kick off at 10:30am in Central – demonstrators will proceed to the US consulate.
