The Zimbabwe consulate in Hong Kong is being sued by a landlord for allegedly failing to pay HK$610,000 in rent. Xipho Development Company Limited, who own the space which the consulate occupies, has filed claims in the High Court.
The consulate, located on the 18th floor of the Harbour Centre on Harbour Road, is now facing a legal challenge seeking the owed rent and repossession of the space.
The contract between the two parties was signed on April 2013 for three years. It was extended by another three years this year.
The consulate allegedly stopped paying rent from March this year, and counting a deposit of HK$350,000, the consulate still owes over HK$600,000.
Zimbabwe has faced hyperinflation in recent years, causing its currency to plunge in value. It then abandoned its currency in 2009.
Apple Daily reported that when using the previous conversion rate of one Hong Kong dollar to Z$1,275,088,743,197,734, the consulate owes about Z$781,629,399,580,210,900,000.
