Hundreds protested against victim blaming and rape culture on Sunday, chanting and holding signs which said “my body, my choice.” The annual Slutwalk march is part of an international movement against women being told how to dress.
Demonstrators gathered at Chater Garden in Central, from which they then walked to the High Court, before arriving in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s nightlife district.
They held signs which said “Don’t tell me how to wear clothes, teach those people not to rape,” as well as “My body, my choice”
The demonstrators also called for an independent investigation of the Bridge of Rehabilitation care home, which was embroiled in a series of scandals involving a sexual assault allegation and six deaths. They also asked to increase public spending to end the privatisation and outsourcing of care homes.
Angie Ng, an organiser of the event, told HKFP that there were roughly 200 participants.
Representatives from a women migrant workers’ group, the pro-democracy party League of Social Democrats, as well as a high school student from Ireland spoke at the event.
“The sister of a mentally handicapped woman spoke up about the sexual abuse and rape her sister and other mentally disabled people she knew had experienced,” Ng told HKFP.
