The Hong Kong Observatory will consider hoisting Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1, the standby signal, on Wednesday morning.
Super Typhoon Meranti will be gathering 560 kilometres southeast of Kaohsiung Tuesday afternoon, said the Observatory. It is expected to enter the South China Sea between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The Observatory said there is a chance it may hoist Strong Wind Signal No. 3 on Thursday, the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, but there is not a significant chance of the No. 8 signal being raised.
The weather forecast for Tuesday afternoon and evening is very hot with sunny periods in the afternoon, and one or two thunderstorms later.
Wednesday is expected to be very hot, and Thursday is expected to be windy with squally showers and swells.
Showers will ease off later on Friday, said the Observatory.
