Lawmaker-elect Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee has said that she did in fact visit the China Liaison Office on Monday, contradicting previous claims that she was not in a vehicle seen entering Liaison Office premises.
The New People’s Party chair voluntarily contacted Ming Pao newspaper on Friday afternoon to say that she visited the China Liaison Office to visit a friend on invitation. The China Liaison Office is an organ of the Beijing government in Hong Kong.
Earlier this week, a car with a number plate attributed to Ip was photographed by Ming Pao. It entered the Liaison Office premises in Sai Wan and stayed for around 50 minutes. Ip previously denied that she was in the car.
On Friday, Ip said that she gave books she published to officials at the office, as she claimed earlier this week.
She added that she “always speaks the truth” and “expresses regret” for misleading the reporter. She told the newspaper that she felt it was necessary to apologise.
Ip said that when she was invited to the Liaison Office, the office told her that there were urgent matters to be discussed, according to Commercial Radio. She added that she cannot disclose what was discussed, nor with whom.
