A Hong Kong representative, Ricky Chan, has won the lamest robot contest – called the Hebocon World Championships – in Japan. Another from Hong Kong, Kit Man, also won the NicoTsuku award for his creativity at the championships.
Chan, of FU productions, built a robot called the “Robot-Controlled Controller Robot,” which consists of two components – a controller that looks like a tiger robot, and a robot that looks like a controller.
When the host asked what the most useless aspect of the robot was, Chan said that he spent more time building the machine which built the case of the controller-like robot – and failing in the process – than building the robot itself.
Robots compete on a board and the winner is the robot that pushes its opponents off the board.
Chan said as he was receiving his prize that “at an earlier Hebocon in Hong Kong, I got second place… this is the first time I’ve gotten first place. But before that I thought that getting second place was like getting first place, because it’s not about winning – it’s about trying to do your best to lose with your low tech robot,” he said.
Flipping Tables
Hong Kong representative Kit Man won the NicoTsuku award with his table-flipping robot.
He won because his robot flipped itself over when it was trying to flip the desk.
