The signal was hoisted at 5:40am despite the HKO stating on Thursday night that it was unlikely the tropical depression would be upgraded.

According to the HKO, the storm is expected to make landfall at the western part of Guangdong in the early afternoon. It will skirt around 150 km west of Hong Kong causing squally showers and winds as it edges closer.
