The Food Truck Pilot Scheme has received a total of 192 applications, according to a statement from the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development.

Gregory So Kam-leung said the scheme is an excellent tourism project, as it can provide diversified and creative food choices for tourists and citizens. He added that the response to the scheme was good.

The controversial scheme will feature 16 food trucks operating at six tourist attractions, including Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai and Hong Kong Disneyland, for two years.

According to a press release issued by the government in March, a selection panel will be established to assess the applications. There will be two stages in the selection, including a first stage of assessing the food truck proposals and a second stage consisting of a cook-off challenge. The food trucks are expected to commence business at the end of 2016 or in early 2017.

When asked by reporters in December whether it will be too difficult to join the scheme, So said the main criteria by which the proposals will be screened will be the creativity and style of the proposed food trucks.

The applications came from 79 individual applicants, 37 partnerships and 76 companies.
