Secretary for Education Eddie Ng Hak-kim will be taking leave to manage family affairs after his wife died on Monday afternoon.
Ng thanked everyone for their concern. His wife, Leung Wan-oi, was formerly a vice-principal at two secondary schools prior to her retirement. Ng and her two children were at her bedside when she passed away, RTHK reported.
Earlier that day, the Education Bureau’s press secretary had announced that Ng would be taking several days of leave to care for his wife, who had been in critical condition.
In Ng’s absence, Under Secretary Kevin Yeung Yun-hung will take his place as acting Secretary for Education.
The press secretary did not divulge further details about the condition of Ng’s wife, but said Ng will maintain close contact with Yeung on Education Bureau matters in the meantime, Apple Daily reported.
Ng apologised for not being able to attend upcoming events as scheduled. Originally, he was to make an appearance at the opening ceremony of an event jointly organised by DBC Radio and the Education Bureau in Kowloon Tong on Monday afternoon.
