A student in Nanjing may go blind after binge-watching 18 consecutive television episodes, reported Zhejiang television station Economic Life channel.
The student was diagnosed with acute glaucoma, after complaining about worsening pain, swollen eyes, photophobia and nausea.
“At the time I thought it was dry eye syndrome as my eyes were getting tired from watching too much television. Doctor said that something is not right and said there were symptoms of glaucoma. I was shocked,” she told the channel.
She said that she watched 16 episodes of South Korean television series “Cheese in the Trap” and two episodes of “Descendants of the Sun”.
“It’s addictive. Apart from eating and sleeping, [I am] always watching. When convenient, I watch it on the iPad. When I need to sleep, I will hide under my duvet and watch it on my phone,” she said, describing her TV-watching habits.
Nanjing Chinese Medicine Ophthalmology deputy director Liu Yu said that the student could only see the biggest letters on the visual acuity chart.
Liu warned people not to stare at a digital screen for too long, especially without background light.
