Dual national Australian and New Zealander Peter Gardner, who was accused of transporting 30 kilogrammes of methamphetamine – or “ice” – from Guangzhou in 2014, is awaiting a decision on whether he will receive the death penalty in April.
He was arrested in 2014 at Guangzhou airport along with his then-girlfriend, Kalynda Davis, who has since been freed and returned to Australia. However, Gardner remained in prison.
He was found guilty of trafficking drugs last May. Gardner had argued that he thought he was transporting bodybuilding peptides and denied that the drugs were his. According to Chinese law, smuggling drugs can result in the death sentence.
Gardner’s 30kg of drugs was reportedly the largest ever single bust of ice, according to Chinese local media.
