At least ten schoolchildren were hurt in a knife attack in Haikou city in Hainan province on Monday, according to Chinese media. The suspect killed himself afterwards.

According to information released by the Hainan police, the children were attacked by a knife-wielding man as they were leaving the school at around 11:30am. One man was found dead nearby – he was later confirmed to be the suspect.

Local Hainan news reported that at least three children suffered head injuries. At least one was hurt in the neck and at least two of the children remain in a serious condition.

Hainan police said that this was an “individual case of extreme behaviour.”
