The man involved in an attempted suicide near Hong Kong government headquarters on Thursday allegedly attempted to assault his ex-girlfriend in Tin Shui Wai beforehand.

The 17-year-old reportedly took out a soaked towel to cover his ex-girlfriend’s mouth and nose but she accidentally pressed a neighbour’s doorbell while struggling against him and he fled the scene, according to Ming Pao.

The pair attend Tin Shui Wai Government Secondary School, and are set to take the DSE exams later this year, reported Apple Daily.

The man allegedly attempted to set himself on fire by covering himself with flammable liquids on Thursday afternoon. Police told HKFP that the man in question was not wearing any clothes. They responded at around 1:30pm and took him to Queen Mary Hospital. The incident occurred on the waterfront promenade in front of the legislature.
