The management company of Leung King Estate’s market has filed a lawsuit against individuals who engaged in illegal hawking activities inside the housing estate.
The lawsuit was filed by Uni-China (Market) Management Limited. However, the content of the writ was not made public, meaning that the details and the claimant’s demands were not disclosed.
The proceedings came as “security officers”, who claimed to be from the market, were accused of setting up metal barricades and beating illegal hawkers at Tuen Mun’s Leung King Estate earlier this month. Two reporters from local media outlet HK01 were also allegedly attacked by the officers at the estate when trying to cover the story.
The Housing Authority, which was responsible for the construction of Leung King Estate, said on Monday that the estate’s public space was managed by Kong Shum Union Property Management (Holding) Limited, which was responsible to the owners’ corporation of the estate. The management contract was further outsourced to Uni-China (Market) Management Limited, which – in turn – outsourced the security of the market to Ever Hero Enterprises Limited.
HK01 later reported that Ever Hero Enterprises Limited did not hold a Security Company Licence, and was suspected of registering with a non-existent company address. Concerns were raised over whether the “security officers” had the authority to disperse the illegal hawkers. Police say they are now investigating their identities.
