Singer David Bowie has died aged 69 following an 18-month battle with cancer.

A statement posted on the singer’s Facebook page read: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer… While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie played at the Hong Kong Coliseum for two nights in December 1983. It was the climax of his Serious Moonlight Tour in which he visited 15 countries, gave 96 performances and sold over 2.6 million tickets.

Famously, he was mobbed by fans during shambolic scenes at Kai Tak Airport.

Bowie also played live in Hong Kong in 1997 and 2004.

His son Duncan Jones confirmed the news.

The iconic singer’s breakthrough came in 1972 with his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

His hits included Heroes, Under Pressure, Life on Mars, Let’s Dance and Suffragette City. His final performance was at a charity concert in New York in 2006.
