A woman in Chongqing fell 24 floors to her death on Saturday after the guardrail on her balcony broke whilst she was watching snow fall, Xinhua reported.

The woman was leaning on a severely oxidised guardrail at her apartment. The building is just a decade old, according to local reports.

Local police have treated the case as an accident. They suspect that the rusted guardrail was no longer able to withstand the woman’s weight.

It is unknown whether the guardrail had eroded due to subpar materials being used in the building process or whether it was a case of poor maintenance.

Snow has not been as widespread in Chongqing for around 20 years, leading many residents, including the woman, to flock outdoors to see the snow.
